“We’re in a state of urgency. We’ve got a lot of guys in the later stages of their careers, and we all want to win.” Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward isn’t shy about what he and his team are after. Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers—who’s rumored to be the Steelers’ next quarterback—has the same mindset. As he made clear back in 2023: “I’m not going to beat around the bush, man. We want to win a Super Bowl.” Both seem to have the same goal for the 2025 season. But are they on the same page with each other?
About four days ago, on his Not Just Football podcast, Cam Heyward expressed that he is “tired of talking about the quarterback situation.” Both Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers are taking time to sign a deal (if they are willing to). Hence, as per the 35-year-old, “I’d rather have it done. I don’t know what ends up happening.” Not only that!
Heyward reportedly took turns to Aaron Rodgers and attacked his methodological approach of delaying things. He said, “I ain’t doing that darkness retreat. I don’t need any of that crap. Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. That’s simple. That’s the pitch. If you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers. If you want to be part of it, so be it. If you don’t, no skin off my back.” Ouch, that’s harsh! But as per the DT, it’s not. Why? Because he thinks – “It’s funny, everybody gave me crap. They said, I called him out. I don’t think I really called him out.” Looks like he wants to clear his stance.

During his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show on Friday, Cam Heyward clarified his stance on the calling out accusations. He stated, “I just said I am not gonna go on a Darkness Retreat to recruit him, that if he wants to be a Steeler, he can be a Steelers – that’s the pick! I don’t know why everybody thought ‘oh Cam’s really going at him’ and so some fans tell, ‘oh yeah keep doing that,’ other fans felt like ‘oh man you really got to scare them off.’ I’m not scaring anybody off. I just want to win games and play good football.” But that’s a common goal, right?
We all remember Aaron Rodgers’ “darkness retreat” at Sky Cave in February 2023—a trip he took to reflect on his life and future. Not long after, he returned and signed with the New York Jets. Now, once again, he’s on the move.
Maybe that’s why Cam Heyward couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at Rodgers’s retreat. With Rodgers officially a free agent, he’s weighing his options, with the Steelers and Giants reportedly in the mix.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Aaron Rodgers' indecision hurting the Steelers' chances, or is patience a virtue in this case?

At one point, rumors suggested Rodgers was eyeing a move to the Minnesota Vikings. But with the Vikings committing to JJ McCarthy, that door has closed, leaving Pittsburgh and New York as the frontrunners. While the Giants seem to be in wait-and-see mode, the four-time MVP made sure to visit the Steelers’ facility on Friday.
And, as expected, Cam Heyward had a very straightforward response to that.
Does Cam Heyward like Aaron Rodgers’s Pittsburgh visit?
The visit happened – Great! But what about the deal? Not done. What? That’s the summary of Friday morning! According to the reports, Rodgers went to the Steelers’s facility and met with the coaches for about six long hours. They have kept the details private. But one thing that came out of that mystery meeting was – the QB didn’t sign with the team. However, according to Adam Schefter, “It was said to be a positive visit, and the two sides will stay in touch.”
This means the deal has been put on hold, as both sides don’t want to rush into a decision—especially Aaron Rodgers, who’s still considering the Giants as an option. Maybe he’s weighing his choices, or maybe he’s waiting to see which team makes the best offer.
At this point, anything can happen. But according to Cam Heyward, there’s no guarantee Rodgers will end up in Pittsburgh.

Of course, Heyward’s past statement—“You have to be a Steeler to be with the Steelers”—still holds true. But his recent comments about Aaron Rodgers raise some doubts. “There are plenty of people who show up and don’t get signed. So, I’m not putting stock in that. That’s not my decision. Omar [Khan] and Mike [Tomlin] will handle it and figure it out.” That makes one thing clear: Heyward isn’t making any guarantees about Rodgers joining the team.

But one thing’s for sure—there’s no bad blood between them. Shutting down any rumors of conflict, Heyward set the record straight: “There’s no problem. Anybody who signs, I welcome to the team. I don’t have an ego or think we can’t win with a guy. I get excited for our team. You bring a guy on like that, he’s got a good knowledge of the game, and I think he can only help.” Now, all that’s left is to see how this plays out—for Rodgers, the Steelers, and everyone else waiting for an answer!
