The AFC Championship winner is here! Kansas City hosted the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium and won the game. No doubt the Bills were trying hard. But some continuous mistakes in that game contributed to the loss, leaving the Buffalo nation fuming.
Many know Sean McDermott’s poor clock management decisions. Now this AFC Championship game has put him in trouble once again. Yes! There was a moment where the Bills would have redeemed themselves. They had the chance to finally beat the Chiefs and their 3-peat hopes. But all dashed into the ground, and McDermott might see himself held responsible for this. During the game, in the second quarter, Sean McDermott didn’t call for a timeout. He let 40 seconds tick away to the 2-minute warning. When the Chiefs got flagged on a PAT, he asked the Bills to try for 2 points instead, but they failed. All these and more infuriated the Mafia, and they have mounted calls against the HC.
Not only that! In the second quarter itself, during a catch, Chiefs’s Xavier Worthy and Bills’s Cole Bishop had some entangled catch of the football. Replays showed that the ball was clearly in Bishop’s firm hands, and that Worthy later managed to get the possession in his arms. However, unfortunately, the favor was given to the Chiefs, who later turned it into a touchdown. So, this controversial play as well as Sean McDermott’s clock blunder have all added salt to the wounds on Bills’s faithful.

Bills came out flat

However, this isn’t the first time it happened. Many have demanded Sean McDermott’s firing earlier too. Before this matchup, the last incident of McDermott fumbling the clock came in week 14 of the regular season. At that time, when the Bills were down 44-35 with less than two minutes left on the clock, they had all three timeouts. However, they needed a miracle to pull off a comeback against the Texans. So, they had to score fast and either recover an onside kick or hope their defense could force a three-and-out.
In that case, Josh Allen drove the team to the 1-yard line with 1:11 left. It was crunch time. But instead of calling a pass play to stop the clock if incomplete, the Bills went for a QB sneak. It didn’t work. Allen was stopped, and Buffalo had to burn a timeout with just 1:05 remaining. That day, analyst Tom Brady also was surprised by the decision, and said, “To me, you take three shots throwing it, don’t use a timeout. And then you can kick it deep, use your three timeouts, and still get the ball with time [to] try the long field goal. I did not like that one bit. That may have cost them the game right there.” And now this 40 seconds of possession blunder has the fans saying enough is enough.
Could it be Sean McDermott’s last season?
Any Bills fan can’t forget what happened on the field. With a one-point lead late in the AFC Championship, everything felt within reach for Sean McDermott’s team. But then came the crucial fourth-down play, which involved a controversial spot. Having successfully converted a 4th and 1 on the previous series, Josh Allen was once again tasked with the exact same. He came up short, albeit not without controversy. This play was reviewed but ultimately upheld. And just like that, the momentum shifted. The Chiefs seized the opportunity, turning the tide, winning 32-29. McDermott’s poor clock management and the aggravating loss that followed left fans frustrated.

Someone said, “Sean McDermott absolutely s–cks and he needs to go tomorrow morning. The @buffalobills need to fire him. Get Gruden. Get Flores. Anyone better than him.” This person suggested Jon Gruden or Brian Flores for the Bills’ head coach position, anyone but McDermott at the start of the next season. Many others had the same opinion, saying, “Fire Sean McDermott,” “Please fire Sean McDermott ffs,” or “Fire Sean McDermott get somebody who can get this team ready for big games.”
The Bills will now have to reset for the next year and begin their bid for their first Super Bowl from scratch. Dark clouds are looming over coach Sean McDermott’s HC role. And reports are beginning to emerge that Mike McCarthy, the former Packers and Dallas HC, could be in line. What’s your take?
