Is Drew Brees the savior the Saints need, or just a nostalgic fantasy for fans?

It was about time that the Saints pulled the plug on their head coach, Dennis Allen, after losing seven games in a row. Since winning the first two games of the season while putting 91 points on the board. The Saints have continued their downward spiral as a loss against the last-placed Panthers put the final nail in the coffin of Allen. He leaves New Orleans with a record of 18-25 without a single playoff appearance since 2022.

He was given the keys to head coach after a highly successful tenure as DC for six seasons in New Orleans. Replacing then-Saints coach Sean Payton, he now leaves the franchise in the worst possible position. For the time being, the Saints have decided to name their special teams coach, Darren Rizzi, interim head coach. However, the fans have come up with their own choice as they look to replace Allen on the hot seat.

Well, that name is their former QB Drew Brees, who spent 15 years playing in New Orleans, “Hire Drew Brees.” Although it’s still early to name Allen’s successor, they might face similar problems in taking on this role. The Saints haven’t had the greatest of luck when it comes to injuries this season. Losing their starting offensive lineman, Eric McCoy, in week 3 was only the beginning of their injury struggles.

Their starting QB Derek Carr, who has now lost to 31 franchises in the NFL, missed three games himself before the Panthers clash. Elsewhere, their top receiver, Chris Olave, has now suffered his second concussion of the season. And those problems aren’t just limited to their offense. As the Saints started their clash on Sunday without three of their top CBs, Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo and Koo-Aid McKinstry.

In his first season with the Saints, Allen had a 7-10 record. And last season, he made a slight improvement with a 9-8 record and narrowly missed out on the playoffs. Well, the last time they did make the playoffs was in Drew Brees final season in the NFL. With fans urging the Saints to get him back into a coaching role, he could bring a revolution to New Orleans.

Fans call for Drew Brees after Dennis Allen sacking in New Orleans

What’s your perspective on:

Is Drew Brees the savior the Saints need, or just a nostalgic fantasy for fans?

Have an interesting take?

Drew Brees was the epitome of what the Saints had imagined a legendary quarterback to be. Over the 15 seasons he played, the 45-year-old won two Offensive Player of the Year awards. He also won a chunk of his 13 Pro Bowls during his time playing for the Saints. But his time in New Orleans was defined by the first Super Bowl he brought them in 2009. Looking back at his time in New Orleans, Brees knows how to cultivate a championship-level culture in the NFL.

With the Saints struggling to keep up against teams week in and week out, the fans have now turned their focus back on getting Brees in the dugout. One of them has asked the Saints to go ahead and name Drew Brees their next head coach, “Go make Drew Brees the head coach.” While another fan has called for an interim role to be given to Brees, “About MF time. Make @drewbrees our interim head coach now.”

As for Brees, he is currently coaching his son’s seven-on-seven team. He has even served as an interim assistant coach for Purdue, whom he played for in college. With years of experience leading the Saints in the NFL and a coaching mindset since hanging up his cleats in 2020. Brees could pounce on the opportunity that has opened up in New Orleans. However, it remains to be seen whether the fans get their wishes fulfilled with Brees getting named the next head coach. As the hunt for Dennis Allen’s replacement begins today.
