The NFL’s greatest rivalries aren’t just about touchdowns and trophies. Sometimes, they’re about how you handle the mic-drop moments. Both the glorious and the gut-wrenching. This week, the spotlight isn’t just on a game-winning drive… but on two quarterbacks whose post-game vibes couldn’t be more different. Yes, we are talking about Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen here.
Mahomes’s Chiefs edged Allen’s Bills 32-29 during Sunday’s AFC Championship showdown. It sent Kansas City to its fifth Super Bowl in six years. But the real drama unfolded after the final whistle. Cameras caught Allen telling Mahomes, “Go get another one.” This was a graceful nod to Mahomes’ pursuit of a historic three-peat. But the moment contrasted. It contrasted sharply with Mahomes’ fiery 2023 outburst against Buffalo…
For those of you who don’t remember, Showtime raged about a penalty. “Wildest f—ing call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides on that play, man. F—ing terrible,” Mahomes said. The difference in reactions lit up social media. Allen is now 0-4 against Mahomes in playoff battles. But he chose magnanimity. Meanwhile, Mahomes faced criticism for past meltdowns. Yeah, despite his four Super Bowl trips. The duality sparked debates. Is Mahomes’s passion a double-edged sword? Or does Allen’s composure hint at a breakthrough waiting to happen?

Rewind to December 11, 2023. The Chiefs lost 17-20 to the Bills after a controversial offside call wiped out a late Travis Kelce-to-Kadarius Toney touchdown. Mahomes exploded on the sidelines. He slammed his helmet and cursed like anything. “F—ing embarrassing,” he said. Even coach Andy Reid criticized the lack of a warning. “It’s a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place,” Reid said. Fast-forward to the last Sunday of Jan. 2025.
Allen hugged Mahomes and urged him to chase glory after a crushing fourth-down drop by Dalton Kincaid ended Buffalo’s season. “I’m proud of you brother, hell of a year, man,” Mahomes replied. The exchange highlighted a rivalry rooted in respect—but also a stark contrast in how each QB processes defeat. However, Mahomes’s playoff dominance over Allen is undeniable.
Four meetings, four Chiefs wins. Yet Allen’s regular-season success (4-1 against Mahomes) proves he can topple the king—just not when it matters most. Sunday’s game added another layer. Allen’s 237 total yards and two touchdowns weren’t enough. But Mahomes’s icy 245-yard, two-TD performance sealed the deal.
“Josh is a great player. He’s always going to battle to the very end,” Mahomes said post-game. However, the timing of this debate couldn’t be worse for Mahomes preparing for another Super Bowl appearance. That’s not the kind of attention any player wants before the biggest game of the season. And fans weren’t just reacting to Mahomes’s past comments. They were dissecting the entire history of how he handles losses.
Fan reactions: passion vs. petulance
Fans weren’t subtle. One tweeted, “BREAKING NEWS 🚨 Patrick Mahomes is a whiny b–ch & throws temper tantrums when the refs don’t give him wins. 🔥🔥.” Another jabbed, “We wouldn’t even know who Mahomes is if it weren’t for the years of cheating by the refs.” Even Chiefs supporters cringed.
“As a Chiefs fan I feel so sorry for that, that was a cry baby act from Mahomes,” one fan posted. But defenders pushed back. “Meh…emotions bring out good and bad…nothing to see here…,” argued one user. Others noted hypocrisy. “Funny thing is chiefs didn’t even lose cause of refs and that call was not nearly as bad as like 8 calls that happened in the 1 single game against Buffalo in the playoffs,” wrote one. However, Mahomes himself owned his missteps back in 2023.

Days after the December meltdown, he apologized: “I regretted the way I acted toward Josh after the game… It’s not a great example for kids.” He even admitted the penalty was correct: “If he [Toney] didn’t check… it is a foul.”
For Mahomes, Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX offers a chance to cement his GOAT bid. A third straight title would place him alongside Brady’s dynasty. For Allen, it’s back to the lab—again. Mutual admiration, however, underlies their rivalry. And it seems destined for more chapters.
As one fan tweeted, “This is Brady-Manning 2.0.” Brady rarely let Manning sniff a playoff win. But Allen might need one breakthrough to flip the script like Manning. Until then, Mahomes holds the keys to the kingdom—and the refs’ calls won’t overshadow his clutch gene.

Sunday’s final image said it all. A gracious Allen, heartbroken but hopeful. And a Mahomes chasing history. Class and chaos coexist in the NFL. And we can’t look away.
