The Chiefs won’t ever disappoint with their roster moves. And, of course, supreme coaching. You can count on HC Andy Reid. He knows how to do it better than anyone else. Every offseason, the Chiefs balance their core by making difficult roster cuts to stay competitive. Honestly, the Chiefs letting their key players walk away is a different ball game. We have seen Tyreek Hill in 2022, Orlando Brown Jr. in 2023, and Juan Thornhill before that. Yet each time, Kansas City found a way to reload. But this time, there’s skepticism about the Chiefs taking unnecessary risks?
This offseason, Kansas City made a bold move by trading Pro Bowl guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears. In return, they received just a 4th-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Chiefs Kingdom is still lost for words. We know Patrick Mahomes always had Thuney’s back. If the O-line struggles, Mahomes may take more hits than ever before. Now, the question is how the Chiefs will support their QB? Even, Andy Reid knows how brutal these choices can be, saying, “You’ve got to be able to manage this cap thing, and it’s a nightmare that way, You’ve got to manage the cap, and sometimes, you have to make decisions that kick you right in the butt.” Well, yeah, but that’s still not very promising.
The Chiefs are gambling on their younger players stepping up. If they don’t, Mahomes could face a level of pressure he hasn’t experienced in years. That could have a ripple effect on the entire offense.

The NFL salary cap is unforgiving, and Andy Reid won’t be here to lose a point. In his eyes, the Chiefs are currently $30 million over the cap, so tough decisions had to be made. Kansas City needed financial flexibility, and moving his contract was one way to create space.
Reid didn’t sugarcoat things when discussing the situation. “If you’re not going to push a ton of money forward, then you’ve got to manage the cap and try to keep consistent with this whole winning thing. And it’s not easy.” The Chiefs have been able to retain some key pieces, like linebacker Nick Bolton and guard Trey Smith. But keeping everyone is not how things work, right?
This isn’t the first time Kansas City has had to make difficult choices. They let Tyreek Hill walk out in 2022 and still won back-to-back championships. But that doesn’t make it any easier. Well, as potential replacements for Thuney, Andy Reid pointed to 2nd-year tackle Kingsley Suamataia and backup guard Mike Caliendo. But are they ready for the job? Neither player has proven themselves at a pro level. Suamataia is a promising draft pick, but he’s untested as a full-time starter. Caliendo filled in at left guard last season, but relying on him for a full season is a risky gamble.

Fans on Andy Reid’s roster move
Let’s be real. Trading away a key lineman while signing players like RB Elijah Mitchell is a kind of head-scratching situation. Fans did not lose this opportunity to take their frustration out. Someone named Matt wrote, “Chiefs dynasty is over. Overpaying mid players like Elijah Mitchell won’t help either.” Others shared similar sentiments, believing the team is weakening its core instead of strengthening it.
Well, Mahomes has always been able to extend plays, but that only works if his line holds up. If protection breaks down, even the best quarterback in the league will see nightmares.

Lexi wrote, “Elijah is like maaaan… 🤣” Well, a valid response for the Chiefs signing Elijah Mitchell, an unspectacular RB while making cost-cutting moves elsewhere. Jaylen re-posted saying, “It’s always cheeseburgers, it’s never how can I improve my football team.” We see where his mock has hinted at. Mahomes needs weapons, but he also needs time in the pocket. Some argue that drafting a star receiver should have been the priority instead. If the offense clicks, Reid and GM Brett Veach will look like geniuses. If not, the Chiefs Kingdom will have a stroke.
As of now, the Chiefs Kingdom is divided. A fan wrote, “Thinking about cheeseburgers and not on how to improve the offense coo”, and it is true, strengthening your O-line should definitely be a priority. Some believe that as long as Mahomes is there, Kansas City remains a contender. Others think these offseason moves are the beginning of the end, with comments like, “No wonder we lost.” Fans like Brady Reeks sarcastically wrote, “My name is Jepp.” Meanwhile, another fan, JohnnyBunton, responded to the Chiefs’ social media post with, “Wow admin this is so funny 😐😐😐.” Yeah, the 2025 season will be the ultimate test.
Even with all the people attacking him on social media, Andy Reid remains chill with his cheeseburger smile. He is confident about the combination of Suamataia and Caliendo. If they don’t fill the void, the Chiefs may have to explore midseason trades or free agency for reinforcements. Kansas City doesn’t really make wrong calls. For now, all eyes are on training camp.
The Chiefs still have Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and one of the best defenses in the league. But without Thuney, they’re entering the 2025 season with more questions than answers. Will this be another case of the Chiefs proving doubters wrong? Or will this be the moment the dynasty takes a hit? Chiefs Kingdom is watching.
