Can Caleb Williams truly emulate Aaron Rodgers, or is he setting himself up for disappointment?

Chicago Bears‘ first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was a quarterback. Caleb Williams! And he is a wonder kid. In his 2 college seasons, the signal caller had 9,782 passing yards. With such a high performance, everyone is hyped about his rookie season. And he is also ready for it. Bears have made it clear that Williams will be their starting signal caller in the coming season. Now, he is giving out some secrets from his preparation.

The rookie revealed one move he had been trying to master since childhood. When unleashed, it can decimate rivals on the gridiron. Williams admitted that he wants to match Aaron Rodgers‘ spin rate on the ball. His reason is, “The more the ball can spin, the easier it is to catch.” His mastery of it during crunch situations will be more interesting to watch.

Caleb Williams has chosen an excellent quarterback to follow, at least in the pass accuracy section. This will be Rodgers’ 20th year in the NFL. In his 19 seasons so far, A-Rod has a 65.3% pass completion rate. That’s a very good number. During his 2 college years, Williams achieved a 66.7% pass completion rate. If he wants to do some big things in his rookie year, he has to go big. And he has shown promise.

Renowned quarterback coach and trainer Will Hewlett revealed a very interesting fact about the Bears’ QB. He shared that most of NFL signal callers have a 4 mph variation in their fastest and slowest (accurate) passes. But Williams can vary his passes by more than 10 mph, that too, keeping his passes accurate. That’s magnificent! Hewlett said that there are only 4-5 quarterbacks who have this kind of control over the ball.

If Williams can successfully copy Rodgers over the spin on the ball, he can also have a distinguished career like him. But there are some loopholes as well.

Caleb Williams’ alarming stats from college years

What’s your perspective on:

Can Caleb Williams truly emulate Aaron Rodgers, or is he setting himself up for disappointment?

Have an interesting take?

Williams had a very high TTT (Time to throw) of 3.27 seconds in his college years, but his passes look amazing. Maybe accuracy overshadows the delay. The Bears QB had a 19.4% pressure to sack rate, 6.58 seconds per scramble, with a 42.6% rate of yardage on scrambles. These stats are pretty high in comparison to the quarterbacks in the league. But he is chill. Looks like Caleb Williams’ game is similar to Rodgers as both of them wait for the defense to spread out and then make a deep pass. Amidst all these, HC Matt Eberflus and GM Ryan Poles have opened up on their expectations.

During his season opening news conference, the GM said, “Lean on the guys around him, be instinctual, let those wild plays happen at the right time. That’s gonna be important.” Given the hype, he has to come up with big performances. And that’s alright! He mixed with the offense very smoothly during training camps.

The HC also clearly stated his expectations, saying, “In the early parts of the game and early downs, he’s (Caleb Williams) just asked to play point guard. He’s just about the process of getting in and out of the huddle, being smooth, and operating the offense.” The team has made its strategies and is ready to move forward with it. They are slowly telling fans about their mindset.

As Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” With the QB mentioning that he has been trying the spin move since a young age, it seems the opposition teams should be worried.
