Caleb Williams snubs Mahomes for Stafford—Is this the most disrespectful take in NFL history?

Caleb Williams isn’t satisfied with Patrick Mahomes’ high ranking on the QB list! Recently, the Chicago Bears QB shocked many NFL veterans and peers with his revelation. The Bear’s rookie first-overall pick, Williams subbed Chiefs’ star QB from a list of top two quarterbacks. This perceived disrespect toward the back-to-back Super Bowl Champion even made former football linebacker LaVar Arrington unhappy.

Fox Sports Radio took to its official Twitter handle to highlight ex-NFL player Arrington’s exasperation over Caleb Williams’ dismissive statement. They shared a clip from the “2 Pros And A Cup Of Joe” podcast, highlighting Williams’ statement, and mentioned Arrington’s reaction in the post caption.

Soon after Caleb made a disregardful statement about Mahomes, LaVar Arrington expressed his dispiritedness. “I’m reeling from hearing him say that because there’s a guy by the name of Patrick Mahomes who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. There’s a guy by the name of Lamar Jackson, who just won the overall league MVP last season in Baltimore and is a super dope quarterback, no doubt about it.” He continued to defend Mahomes’ ranking as the NFL’s top quarterback.

“But number two, you have Mahomes. I would imagine I have Mahomes at one. I say, take your pick between Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen at number two. And then one of those goes to three. Yeah, that’s your three right there. I found it to be an outlandish statement by a young, amazing talent in this league,” Arrington further stated.

Arrington’s annoyance came after Caleb Williams picked Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets QB, as the top quarterback on his list, while he placed Matthew Stafford, the Los Angeles Rams’ QB, as the second-best quarterback in the NFL.

During the “Up & Adams” show with Kay Adams, which premiered on August 9, the Chicago Bears QB was asked about his top NFL QBs. Williams expressed his disagreement with Stafford’s NFL Top 100 ranking, which placed Stafford 42 among the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2024.

“I mean, he’s unbelievable. Like, there’s a couple plays where he’ll go play action. He has the linebacker on a string, like he wants the backer to go here, and he’ll throw it right behind his head with the perfect touch, perfect velocity.” he continued,” I was not happy [with Stafford’s NFL Top 100 ranking]. I don’t think I can name two, maybe three quarterbacks that play the position better than Matthew Stafford,” the young Bears QB stated.

In addition to praising Matthew Stafford’s play, Williams further put Rodgers as his number one QB. “Matthew Stafford is Matthew Stafford. Aaron Rodgers, right now in the game, is my number one QB. Matthew is top-two in the league. I give him his respect,” he remarked.

Clearly, Patrick Mahomes was named the top QB in the NFL list, as he led the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LVIII in 2023. On the other hand, Super Bowl winner Rodgers had to stay away from all the games in 2023 due to a serious injury in the opening quarter of his Jets debut at MetLife Stadium against the Buffalo Bills. However, Williams seemed to be dissatisfied with Mahomes’ top rating over Matthew Stafford.

Not only was Williams amazed by Stafford’s outstanding records and play, but the Chiefs star QB, Mahomes, also expressed his admiration for Matthew Stafford.

Growing up watching NFL living legend Stafford play, Patrick Mahomes couldn’t even put into words how significant Stafford’s influence was on his NFL career. His outstanding performance in Super Bowl 2022, when he led the Rams to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, made an indelible impression on the Chiefs. It was the time when NFL QB was himself aiming to lead the Chiefs to a third Super Bowl championship.

Ahead of the Super Bowl game during a practice game against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, Mahomes admired the Rams QB. “Everybody talks about the sidearm throws and the no-look passes,” Mahomes said. “I mean that’s from watching guys like Matthew Stafford play that I’ve been able to do it,” Mahomes said.

In addition to this, Texas native Mahomes also shed light on Stafford’s influence on his life. “I kind of got some hype coming into the league, but I mean you watch the film. He’s the guy that kind of started that stuff off, him and Brett Favre. And so it really is cool to be able to kind of be along those guys now, and be able to have my own impact on the game. I mean, those are the guys that I watched, that influenced me to be the quarterback that I am.”

Undoubtedly, Stafford had a successful 2023 season with 24 TDs, 3,965 yards, and 11 interceptions in his 15 games in 2023. He also secured a selection to play in his second Pro Bowl. Thus, he made a strong return from a disappointing 2022 campaign after winning the Super Bowl the previous year. Although he is nearing the end of his career, Williams feels he is still one of the top players in the league.

Thus, Stafford’s outstanding records left a notable mark in the NFL realm. However, Caleb Williams’ comments have indeed sparked a heated debate, as fans are considering the storied history of Patrick Mahomes and his indomitable performances in the NFL. To each their own!
