Is Bryce Young the savior the Panthers desperately need, or is it too soon to tell?

The Carolina Panthers shocked many by benching Bryce Young just two games into the 2024 season. After a rough 0-2 start, Young’s performance raised eyebrows, with three interceptions and a dismal 44.1 passer rating. The Panthers, however, are calling this a “timeout” for the former #1 overall pick, intending to reinsert him later in the season. But is this the solution?

Some Bryce Young fans have raised voices in favor of the QB. One of the fan is the NBA legend LeBron James. James didn’t hold back when discussing the Panthers’ rough start on the Gojo and Golic podcast. As a big fan of Bryce Young, LeBron weighed in on the decision to bench the young quarterback for veteran Andy Dalton. “I don’t want to say they’re giving up on their young prospect already, but you know… through two weeks, they kind of have,” LeBron said, expressing disappointment at how quickly the Panthers turned to their backup. With the team struggling, LeBron was doubtful about Dalton’s chances to spark a turnaround.

Talking about the Panthers’ upcoming game against the Raiders, LeBron wasn’t optimistic. “Everything is just in disarray right now,” he said, adding that he doesn’t see Carolina breaking their losing streak, especially on in Las Vegas. Backing Bryce Young, LeBron made it clear he believes the Panthers should stick with their rookie QB.

It seems Lebron is not the only fan of the 23-year-old! Nick Saban, Young’s college coach, argued the problem lies more with the surrounding team and not Young’s talent. “Does he have the players around him to even give him a chance to be successful?” Saban questioned. Dak Prescott chimed in, expressing empathy, saying, “It’s not a one-man problem. Control what you can control and stay true to yourself.”

Analysts fear the Panthers’ decision echoes the Jets’ failed handling of Zach Wilson. Carolina might have bigger problems, as many believe Young was set up to fail. As for now, veteran Andy Dalton takes the reins. While not the long-term solution, Dalton’s experience gives Carolina some stability as they figure things out.

For Young, his future remains uncertain—his potential is undeniable, but the Panthers must build the right team around him.

Why Andy Dalton is crucial for the Panthers’ turnaround

Andy Dalton is stepping into a pivotal role for the Carolina Panthers, who have had a brutal start to the 2024 season. With Bryce Young struggling and the team sitting at 0-2, the veteran Dalton brings much-needed experience to a reeling offense. Dalton, a 14-year NFL vet and former star of the 2011 draft class, has seen it all in his career. He’s had seasons with over 4,000 passing yards, and in years where he’s played at least 13 games, he’s only had fewer than six wins once.

Panthers’ head coach Dave Canales made it clear why Dalton’s experience is key, saying, “His resume speaks for itself… I believe he gives us our best chance to win this week.” Dalton’s ability to read defenses and avoid costly mistakes offers a steadiness that Carolina desperately needs, especially after Bryce Young’s rough two-game stretch where he threw three interceptions and zero touchdowns.

Analysts also see Dalton’s entry as a positive shift. Raiders’ defensive coordinator Patrick Graham praised the veteran, acknowledging that “you’re dealing with a quarterback who’s seen everything.” It’s clear that Dalton’s experience, especially in avoiding sacks and controlling the pace, will be crucial against a Raiders defense featuring Maxx Crosby, who’s just three sacks away from becoming third on the Raiders’ all-time list.

Though Dalton may not be a long-term solution for the Panthers, his calm leadership and ability to steady the ship could prevent further blowout losses. As Canales summed up, “Dalton gives us our best shot,” and for now, that’s what Carolina needs to stop the losses.
