Myles Garrett teaming up with NASA—Is he the most impactful NFL player off the field?

The Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett might have different aspirations besides his time in the gridiron. His recent activities off the field have suggested that Garrett has goals that other players might not relate to. Going through his latest investments and partnerships might amaze a lot of us out there.

One of the new partnerships that is catching the eye of many is Garrett joining hands with a former NASA scientist, Dr. Lonnie Johnson, as posted by Boardroom. Looking at the Instagram post, the caption shares words from Brandon Martin, CEO of Johnson Energy Storage, “We’re honored to have Myles Garrett join us in this mission, as his commitment to innovation and sustainability perfectly aligns with our vision for the future.”

Well, speaking about Johnson Energy Storage, it is a company that is slated to produce batteries that offer significant advantages over traditional lithium-ion. But what are those advantages? Sources have stated that the batteries would be manufactured with greater safety, higher energy density, and lower manufacturing costs.

If it does happen, it will be a huge boost over the batteries we are currently using. However, looking at Garrett’s involvement with the mission, it might not be the first time he has made himself a part of a collaboration that can be directly linked with science. A few years back, the Browns’ star became the first-ever Community Science Ambassador for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Announcing his partnership with the Museum, CEO Sonia Winner said, “We have been so fortunate to get to know Myles, and we look forward to partnering with him in expanding access to science, especially in underserved communities.” Adding to her thoughts, Winners stated that 90% of Americans are interested in learning about science, while museums are the ideal spot to access authentic information.

Even Myles Garrett showcased his excitement about the new endeavour, stating, “I’m excited to continue working with the Museum team to share their important mission. Together, we can spark curiosity, improve science education, and expand access in new and fun ways.” But the Museum isn’t the only thing that Garrett is part of, as he is also the captain of the NFL Waterboys. It is a charity that is responsible for providing clean water for communities globally.

Besides Myles Garrett remembering former NFL player Leland Melvin’s time with NASA

Leland Melvin was the first NFL player to have earned the accolade of turning into a NASA scientist after hanging his cleats. Initially drafted by the Detroit Lions back in 1986, Melvin had a rough start to his professional football career. After suffering multiple injuries, he was traded to the Cowboys but swiftly released while not making it to a regular season match in his short-lived NFL dream.

However, Melvin soon turned his attention to becoming a NASA scientist after completing his master’s in materials science engineering from the University of Virginia. Within a year, Melvin joined NASA and was accepted to their astronaut class in less than a decade. He went on to be a part of two missions while racking up more than 565 hours in space.

Speaking about the difference between a pro footballer and an astronaut, Melvin conveyed, “You train and practice so much that on the field or in space, you get into this zone where you know exactly what that person is going to do. And in space, in the shuttle, if something fails, one system fails, you know what you’re going to in the next system.”

Well, Melvin and Garrett are just some of the examples of NFL players who have stories outside their professional football careers. And looking at the future, we might see more players getting involved with science as it continues to evolve every day.
