Is Kevin Stefanski's loyalty to Jameis Winston admirable or a recipe for the Browns' continued struggles?

Kevin Stefanski and his support for the QBs in Cleveland knows no boundaries. After standing up for his now injured-$230M QB Deshaun Watson, Stefanski is showing the same faith in Jameis Winston. One week after leading the Browns to an unlikely win over the Ravens, Winston had a massive falloff facing the Chargers in week 9.

His three TDs and 334 passing yards helped the Browns get their second win of the season. However, when everything looked like going in the right direction, up came the Chargers. Facing them before the bye week, Winston only managed to complete 26-of-46 passes for only 235 yards. And his three interceptions with just one TD subjected the Browns to their seventh defeat of the season.

He even found himself getting sacked a whopping six times, thereby resurfacing the holes in the Browns’ offense. But this embarrassing outing didn’t get Stefanski to change his QB yet again this season. As he reiterated his stance on Winston’s role in the team. Taking on the Saints after their bye week, Winston would yet again start at the center in New Orleans.

Without Winston, the Browns only have Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe as their QB options. But right now, it doesn’t look like the Browns are ready to rely upon their practice squad members who were just signed last month. Even Winston expressed his disappointment after giving away 3 interceptions, “I had three of them, and we all know the plays that we can help this team out with. So that’s just accountability, and I think we’re going to embrace that. Having a week really digest how we can get better is required.”

As the Browns set themselves for a future with Winston as their starting QB. It seems like Watson’s time could well and truly come to an end after suffering an Achilles injury in week 7.

Is Deshaun Watson’s time in Cleveland over after Jameis Winston’s growing support in Cleveland?

Have an interesting take?

Right now, seeing where the Browns stand in their season, would you believe the sacrifices they made to bring Watson into Cleveland? Well, you might not, as the Browns traded away their first-round picks in 2022, 2023, and 2024. And not only that they went ahead and gave Watson a $230M contract (fully guaranteed). His first season with the Browns saw him throw for just 1,102 yards, seven TDs and 5 interceptions.

Well, the following year, there wasn’t much improvement as the Browns QB got seven TDs for 1,115 yards and four interceptions. But he only appeared for six games after injuring his right shoulder, which ended his season early. Even this season, Watson didn’t even cross 200 yards over the games he played before finding himself sidelined for the season.

And if the Browns do decide to cut Watson from their roster. They would have to eat up $172M and $99.8M over the next two years because of the contract they handed him in the first place. Or, as per NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the second option could be “a Brock Osweiler-style trade where you send assets with the player to get rid of the player and get rid of his money.”

But considering the huge and problematic contract that the Browns gave Watson, it doesn’t look like anyone would be interested. So, for now, the Browns only have themselves to blame as they navigate through a season that isn’t going anywhere after 10 weeks.
