LeBron James calls out Cleveland fans: Is booing injured players the new low in sports?

In a tough Week 7 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns took a devastating 21-14 loss. But the game itself wasn’t the only heartbreak for Cleveland fans. Star quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, leaving the Browns without their starting QB for the second straight year. The real shocker, though? Some fans in the stands booed and cheered as Watson was carted off the field in pain.

NBA superstar LeBron James didn’t hold back when addressing the fans’ reaction. On social media, LeBron called out Cleveland fans, saying, “Booing anyone that’s down with an injury let alone your own player is LAME AF!!” He reminded the city of everything they’ve been through, urging fans to show more respect, especially for someone wearing their team’s colors.

The Browns confirmed Watson’s fate after an MRI revealed a ruptured Achilles tendon, which will require surgery. Watson is now sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 season. The Browns, sitting at a disappointing 1-6 record, will need to find a way to push through the rest of the year without their starting quarterback.

Watson’s teammates were also vocal about the crowd’s reaction. Safety Juan Thornhill didn’t mince words, calling it “pathetic” and saying, “Cheering for someone’s injury is f—ing sick! Zero respect.” Even defensive star Myles Garrett expressed disgust, stating, “We should be ashamed of ourselves as Browns and as fans.”

Veteran QB Jameis Winston, who had to step in for Watson, added, “I am very upset with the reaction…he put his body and life on the line for this city.” It’s clear Watson’s peers aren’t standing for any disrespect towards their QB the time when he needs them the most.
