Is Deshaun Watson the right QB for the Browns, or is it time for a change?

The Cleveland Browns fell to 1-4 against the Commanders after their 34-13 loss. They lost their third straight game and Brown’s Deshaun Watson looked disappointing after he passed for only 125 yards—that’s the fewest he has thrown in the last two seasons if we leave out a game he left because of an injury. Against the Commanders, the QB was also sacked seven times and lost a fumble, before being replaced by backup Jameis Winston for the final drive.

With Winston as a replacement and considering Watson’s performance, many felt that the team may consider changes in their QB department. Is it really going to happen? Head coach Kevin Stefanski said no!

“We’re not changing quarterbacks. We need to play better. I need to coach better,” he said. But things look quite bleak.

This season, the QB completed 60.2% of his passes for 852 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. What does Watson have to say about his team’s latest loss, though?

“The offense is going to go as far as I go. So, at the end of the day, we’re not doing enough offensively. As a quarterback, you take all the pressure. You take all the heat. You take all the blame. I’ve got to find ways to bring everybody else along with each other, [find out] how we can go out here on Sundays and eliminate all the mistakes that are going to cause us to get behind the eight ball and put ourselves in situations that we don’t want to be in.”

Seeing the way their offense has performed, averaging just 3.8 yards per play, Stefanski may have some decisions to make sooner or later. Or else, it will be a season-ender for the Browns in the coming weeks. This awful week, Watson didn’t have much to show for himself. Even his TD against the Commanders came during the last quarter when the Browns were already trailing by 28 points.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Deshaun Watson the right QB for the Browns, or is it time for a change?

Have an interesting take?

There isn’t any doubt that Watson is one of the worst QBs this season. But how bad is he? Well, he ranks lowest among all the QBs in the league with a QBR of 23.6. This isn’t even the first time that Watson has found his QBR hitting the trenches. Going back to the last two seasons, his QBR would have been in the bottom third. However, he couldn’t play enough snaps; thereby, people overlooked that stat on most occasions.

His 9-8 in 17 games for the Browns as a starter is not something that would be looked back upon in Cleveland. Also, he has yet to appear in a playoff game.

Deshaun Watson continues to struggle as former players shine elsewhere

Watson is currently on a five-year $230 million contract that makes it difficult for the Browns to get rid of their man. If they decide to pull the plug on him before next season, they would still have to pay $92 million while taking a $173 million hit on their salary cap. And that’s not where it ends, as the Browns could find themselves fined $86 million over the next two seasons if they decide to cut the QB from their roster.

While the team is struggling with Watson, their former No.1 pick, Baker Mayfield is hitting strides this season. Leading the Buccaneers this season, he has contributed with 13 TDs while throwing just two interceptions. He even helped the Bucs qualify for playoffs last season, proving his capabilities away from Cleveland.

Even Joe Flacco racked up five TDs and zero interceptions over the two games he has played for the Colts this season. This Sunday, Flacco threw 359 yards more than Watson. It seems the Browns are missing out on a lot. The team has scored under 20 in all five games. As per ESPN Research, this is their longest streak to start a season since 1999.

Will Watson be able to save his starting position in Cleveland? Or will the Browns look for a change as they try to come out of their slum next week in Philadelphia? Well, we will find out soon.
