The Broncos have benched Russell Wilson for the rest of the 2023 season. They have shifted their focus to financial planning for the future. Wilson boasts better statistics than Patrick Mahomes this year. He has managed to score 26 passing touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 3 rushing TDs, and a 6.9 yards per attempt rate. However, he has 16 interceptions and no rushing touchdowns. Furthermore, Russell still finds himself sidelined despite his impressive performance. This decision is intertwined with Wilson’s significant contract, a five-year, $242.6 million extension kicking in next season. The terms of his contract influenced the Broncos’ caution. Wilson is set to earn $39 million, guaranteed in 2024.

Not only that, he also has an additional $37 million guarantee contingent on passing a physical by early March. An injury in the season’s final games could activate this guarantee, which is a scenario Denver aims to avoid. This is just a careful approach by the Broncos. The coach of the team, Sean Payton, also commented on the situation.
