The Chiefs have proven that they are willing to hunt within their division. If you recall, the team signed RB Samaje Perine last year, who was released by the Broncos due to budget cuts. And something similar can be up for this offseason too. This year, it looks like Andy Reid and the team are keeping an eye on one of the Orange Crush’s big weapons. And while this guy has always played an essential part for Sean Payton, they may be looking to release him. Talk about made for each other.
Well, everyone knows that Kansas City had a significant RB issue last year. Everything fell apart for them at that position and they need to address it this summer. Maybe this clue already told you that the star in question is RB Javonte Williams. A remarkable talent with pretty bad luck. In 2021, the man got a four-year contract with the Broncos worth $8,865,753. This money was warranted given his amazing ability to tear it up on the field. But every man’s story isn’t good. And the bad part about Williams’ story is his injuries.

Everyone would remember Javonte Williams’ severe knee injury in 2022. This injury became a nightmare for him, resulting in much lower performance in the next years. Oh-no! Even last season, the RB struggled, totaling 139 carries for 513 yards and four touchdowns. While injuries hindered the running back, Andy Reid may be aiming to improve him.

On the other side, Patrick Mahomes and the team have been battling without a leading RB last season. They lost a lot because of that and even the QB was unable to show his true skills. And everyone, including HC Andy Reid, understands how much the team could have accomplished if Mahomes had been able to peak his performance.
Rumors even indicate that Williams can do great things when teamed with a great quarterback. After all, he is the same man who set a CFB single-season school record of 132 points and 22 total touchdowns in 2020. Wow! And we have numerous examples of players who advanced their careers after changing teams. Look at Peyton Manning, for example. He had a severe neck injury with the Colts in 2011, and the organization released him. Everyone assumed it was finished for him, but what happened? Only two years later, in 2013, he set the single-season passing touchdown record (55) for the Broncos.
This shows that the NFL is certainly an unpredictable game, and who knows it better than Andy Reid? And who knows, bringing Williams to the table could be their next big thing. As of now, the team is already taking a significant risk with the running back position. Like they haven’t made their final calls for this position yet, man!

Andy Reid and company are still hanging Isiah Pacheco in the middle
The Chiefs had a disappointing rushing season in 2024. They were 15th in running touchdowns, 22nd in overall rushing yards, and a dismal 29th in yards per carry. These factors, though never prevented them from winning the game, did make their games close. Perhaps these were the reasons why the team was unable to finish their season ideally. Patrick Mahomes, arguably the best QB in the game, was also not able to give his all and was not among the top five best QBs last year.
What’s your perspective on:
Could Javonte Williams be the missing piece for the Chiefs' Super Bowl puzzle next season?
Have an interesting take?
They desperately needed a good running back after Isiah Pacheco broke his fibula in week two and was sidelined for nearly the whole season. At that crucial time, Andy Reid was able to get the squad back on track with the help of Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt. They were in luck to get them. But this year, the club hopes to go more than that.
Now you understand why they want a good RB so badly; they simply want to lock him in for the long term. And if we talk about their current RBs, then, Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt have already been declared unrestricted free agents. But that’s not all. On top of that, if the rumors are true, the same could be done with Isiah Pacheco.

Pacheco’s 96 receptions for 347 yards and one touchdown last season have made his future on the team dangle. So, only time will tell what the Chiefs can do with him. Andy Reid is someone who will not take a step without having a backup. So it is evident that Isiah Pacheo will only be released if the team does not have a new top RB. But do you believe Javonte Williams would be suitable for that role? Or will a rookie come in for Kansas City?
