The Denver Broncos have hinted at some significant changes about Russell Wilson’s future on the team. The head coach, Sean Payton, made major announcements at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Payton stressed the importance of the decision regarding the quarterback situation while also giving a timeline for the decision.

Russell Wilson has been in the talks since he got benched in the last two games of the 2023 season. While it was expected that the Broncos would release or trade the quarterback, the main hurdle lying in the way is the dead cap money. If dropped, Denver would lose $85 million, further complicating the predicament. But Payton has decided on a way forward.

Payton answered many burning questions in this year’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Talking about Wilson’s future in Denver, the HC stated that the final decision will be made “within the next two weeks.” This announcement could come after meeting with the team owner and CEO, Greg Penner, next week.

Describing the position as “vital,” Payton clarified that much thought will go into choosing the upcoming season’s quarterback. The head coach also has created a list of qualities the team will consider for the position. “Six-foot-two might be a starting point for the prototype of a QB,” Payton said, “at some point, teams are going to make you win from the pocket.” The HC described the team’s plans for the coming season, and Wilson’s future in Denver seemed increasingly bleak.

Payton referenced a meme, hinting at a new QB for 2024

As Payton discussed the team’s plans, Denver might have decided about Wilson. The head coach mentioned a meme he came across, which joked about the team’s inability to keep a QB for a long time. Payton affirmed that their “next one” will be a distinct case, clearly hinting at a quarterback change.

“I saw this humorous meme the other day, and there’s a Broncos fan with a shirt on, and there was like eight quarterbacks’ names with a cross through it. Our job is to make sure that this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”
