As the NFL’s 2024 free agency approaches, the safety market is bustling with activity, and it looks like Justin Simmons is set to join the fray. Coach Sean Payton appears to be in house cleaning mode, having already shown the door to QB Russell Wilson, and now it’s Simmons’ turn.

Picked as a compensatory third-round choice back in 2016, Simmons blossomed into one of the league’s top safeties, consistently earning accolades. His journey in Denver saw him snag two Pro Bowl selections, get named to the second-team All-Pro four times, and make the NFL Top 100 list thrice. It’s been quite the ride for Simmons, whose on-field brilliance has matched his reputation off it. But now that ride has encountered a bump. He won’t be “riding” with the Broncos anymore.

In a twist that left many scratching their heads, the Broncos’ official announcement had a nostalgic tone, saying “Justin will always be a Bronco”. Yet, the sentiment felt a bit empty, as Adam Schefter shared that the team was releasing him. The statement thanked him for his standout performances over eight seasons.

It also took note of his evolution from a promising player to an All-Pro and team leader. Off the field, Justin was a consistent candidate for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for the team. However, his efforts weren’t confined to Denver. Back in his hometown of Stuart, Florida, Justin was a beacon of hope and guidance for countless young people, always ready to lend his support to community initiatives. His countless hours at the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club are a part of his legacy.

Insider Adam Schefter noted that this move would save the Broncos a whopping $14.5 million against the salary cap, adding a practical angle to the emotional farewells. But many are also speculating that his open support for Russell could also be the reason behind his release.

Simmons believed in his QB like no one else. During his debut season with the Broncos, he wrapped up the season with a 5-12 record. Many fans called out his $245 million signing as a big disaster. Yet, through it all, Simmons supported him. He said this in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“I know he’s one of the hardest workers, if not the hardest worker I’ve ever been around and that I’ve seen, and his attention to detail and his preparation has already made me a better player, being his teammate,” Simmons said. “And so, I’m always going to put my full trust and confidence in him as my quarterback, and I can’t wait to see what that looks like heading into Year Two with us.” As soon as Wilson was released, he also posted a tweet sending out his love.
