“My goal is to be with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a long time, hopefully finish my career there,” former Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson had said just two months ago, amid a free agency threat that could pull him down to the trenches. Having come off a 6-5 season that didn’t do him any favors, the writing already seemed on the wall. Yet, gathering the last sliver of hope left, the quarterback almost seemed to be praying to be that coveted long-time starter which he hasn’t been since leaving the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022. Well, hope only takes you so far…

Unceremoniously, and without much deliberation, not only did Mike Tomlin cut the veteran from the roster, but they reportedly “had no real interest” in bringing him back either. The New York Giants, instead, heartbroken over Aaron Rodgers’ hesitance, made an offer to Wilson—a one-year, $10.5 million payday worth upto $21 million, which many have deemed a mistake since.

But what other options did the NY Giants have? Rodgers was keeping them waiting, so they had to first settle for former New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston. And merely three days later, Russ was also on board, wrapping up the QB depth room with Tommy DeVito roped in, too. Interestingly, none of the three are coming off a solid season, which a Broncos legend didn’t shy away from pointing out in the most brutal of ways…

He bluntly called the Giants’ decision as “dumb”. To make matters worse, he’s even demanding an apology from Pittsburgh. For what? We’ll get to that later. But first, here’s why former Broncos star Mark Schlereth believes the Giants made a stupid mistake. In the latest episode of The Stinkin’ Truth Podcast, Mark didn’t hold back while discussing the Giants’ QB situations. He bluntly laid out the facts without mincing words. Schlereth said, “It tells me one thing about the New York Giants: one, they’ve got Dumb and Dumber playing quarterback,” talking about the Giants signing Wilson and Winston.

For starters, Wilson isn’t coming off a great season. On top of missing the first six games due to calf injury last season, the QB’s final five stars were all losses with a 13.2 average margin of defeat. Ultimately, the signal-caller finished the season completing 63.7% of his passes for 225.6 yards per game with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in his 11 regular-season starts.

Winston, on the other hand, was put on starting duty after Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury in Week 7 vs the Bengals, and recorded a 2-5 start while clinching 2,121 passing yards, a 61.1% completion rate, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions

Understandable why the 59-year-old is ticked off. “They got Jameis Winston. Jameis has never seen a team meeting that he didn’t want to throw it right into, you know? So, uh, the interception king.” The Giants signed Winston on a two-year deal worth $8 million. “You got Russell Wilson who, you know, doesn’t operate in the middle of the football field and compiles empty statistics. And I think they lost in Pittsburgh the last four or five games, you know, whatever it was,” added Mark, iterating Giants’ faulty QB choices.

Schlereth didn’t hold back, calling Russell Wilson out for having ‘hollow statistics.’ Well, ever since Wilson left the Seahawks, his career has hit rock bottom. First, he had a brutal two-year stint with the Broncos, and now he’s coming off a disappointing season in Pittsburgh.

Mark Schlereth: They overhyped Russell Wilson

Wilson’s season with the Steelers started with a calf injury, which kept him off the gridiron for the first five weeks. Justin Fields played as the QB1 during those weeks. In Week 7, the Super Bowl XLVIII winner made his debut in Steelers gear. Russ went on to win five consecutive games for the team. It had the fans hyped, praising Wilson. Then, in mid-December, everything started to fall apart; the team lost back-to-back games. It ended with Pittsburgh letting Wilson walk into free agency earlier this month.

Now, Mark Schlereth is demanding an apology from the Steelers fandom. All you people, all you people in Pittsburgh, owe me an apology, right?” said Mark on the podcast. He added, “He had one good game or two good games, and you all came at me. All the radio stations in Pittsburgh, you guys know exactly who you are, had me on, wanted me to eat crow,” calling out all those who thought Wilson could get them a Lombardi.

Mark adds that he believes the Giants are going to draft a QB next month. They have the number three pick, and they would either go with Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. “Bottom line is, this move tells me the New York Giants are going to draft a quarterback at number three unless they move up.

Well, Mark is in no mood to sugarcoat words. Interestingly, Russ had made big promises to the Giants as well, just like he did when he signed with the Steelers. From building a winning mentality to getting the best out of young players, Russ painted a picture of many dreams for Giants fans at his introductory press conference. And if the QB fails to turn those dreams into reality, not only his but also coach Brian Daboll’s job will be in danger. Not to mention the amount of criticism John Mara and the team will face after this. So, good luck to the Giants with that decision.
