Forgive us for saying this, but Brock Purdy might be on his way to becoming the next Patrick Mahomes. The young 49ers quarterback is credited with the highest passer rating this season, along with the best completion percentage and yards/attempt, and he is just 23.

But still, isn’t it too early to compare him to someone who already has 2 Super Bowls and two NFL MVPs to his name? You’ll realize it soon. But as the famous proverb goes, ‘stats don’t lie’, they aren’t lying in this case either. Hold tight as we compare two of the greatest NFL quarterback prospects in recent history.

Is 23-year-old Brock Purdy better than same-aged Patrick Mahomes?

The 49ers QB went unnoticed in the 2022 NFL draft. But after his recent statistics, he can’t be overlooked anymore. Purdy has amassed wild numbers this season, being the distant leader in completion percentage (70.2), yards/attempt (9.6), and passer rating (116.1). Additionally, he is third in the touchdowns (23), seventh with passing yards (3185), and has second lowest interceptions (6) among the 3000+ yard QBs.

Mahomes, on the other hand, led the league in yards/attempt (8.8), passer rating (113.8), and a mammoth 50 touchdowns. He had a comparatively lower output at pass completion percentage (66%), completing only 383 of his 580 passes, and was intercepted a relatively higher 12 times. To add to his glory, the then-23 quarterback also clinched the NFL MVP in his first full season as a starter.

So there you had it. On a statistical level, Purdy remains arguably even more impressive than the legend, while Mahomes made up for it at the season-end. Not bad, especially for someone who earned the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ tag just one season ago.

The redemption alone puts him on line with Mahomes for one of the greatest starting seasons ever, even if hardcore Mahomies are against any direct comparison. But why the redemption, one may ask? Well, Purdy was not a superstar when he started,

One thing is for certain: Purdy didn’t have the superstar breakout Mahomes had. The quarterback was harshly ignored by franchise owners and became the last pick in the NFL 2022 draft, earning him the title of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’. But just after one year, the owners who overlooked him might be frustrated with themselves. Purdy has taken up the hardest job in the league this season; defeating the Eagles, and succeeded.

The 49ers are 9-3 in the season, and on par with the Cowboys to challenge the Eagles once against for the NFL title. The Chiefs on the other end are visibly struggling more than usual, and star QB Mahomes and TE Kelce have also recorded a drop in their numbers. They aren’t the AFC top seeds anymore, losing the tag to the Ravens following the Eagles’ loss on week 10.
