What the heck is even going on with the San Francisco 49ers. It’s understandable that the team is losing due to a lot of injured players in the roster. But what about those who refuse to play despite being dressed up for the occasion? Clearly, the team would want to cut ties with the guy, right? That’s probably the case with De’Vondre Campbell of the Niners.

Campbell refused to enter the game, per The Athletic. Reports say that he didn’t want to play during the third quarter and didn’t step on the field for the rest of the game. Of course, Kyle Shanahan wasn’t too keen on talking about it. On that note, his teammate, Charvarius Ward thinks that the linebacker won’t be a part of the team next season.

Per Matt Barrwows of The Athletic, “Suffice to say, Charvarius Ward didn’t think Campbell handled the situation well by dressing for the game and refusing to [play]. ‘He’s probably gonna get cut,’ he [Ward] said.” We don’t know his reasons to not play, but we do know that his teammates are not happy about this at all. For instance, George Kittle was one of the people who voiced his opinion.

“That is one person who decided not to play for his teammates,” 49ers tight end George Kittle said. “It’s one person making a selfish decision. … I’ve never been around anybody that’s ever done that. And I hope I’m never around anybody that does that again.” But the chaos in the locker room doesn’t stop here.

“He’s a professional,” Ward said. “He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could have told them that before the game. I feel like that was some selfish s— that he did. It definitely hurt the team.” Brock Purdy, who was struggling to complete a single pass today weighed in on the situation as well.

Is DeVondre Campbell's refusal to play a sign of deeper issues within the 49ers' locker room?

“This one hurts,” 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy said. “We have a lot of guys in the locker room who are gonna continue to fight, including myself. For this organization, for our fanbase and for each other more than anything to finish out the season in the right way. Focus on one game at a time and see where we are at, at the end of it.”

Unfortunately, De’Vondre Campbell slander didn’t stop there. It was a do or die moment for the 49ers so it’s unfathomable how a teammate can turn their back on his franchise.

More De’Vondre Campbell slander

The linebacker recorded all but 5 tackles at the rainy Levi’s Stadium. But when De’Vondre Campbell told Shanahan that he won’t be playing after the third quarter, the 49ers head coach was baffled. In fact, no one in his 8 years of head coaching experience has ever told him that. “He said he didn’t want to play today,” Shanahan said. “That was in the third quarter.”

“People noticed, but when someone says that, you move on,” the Niners coach continued. “That’s somebody who doesn’t want to play football. That’s pretty simple. I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so we don’t need to talk about him anymore.”

But Fred Warner did something different. He decided not to speak on the matter and insisted on keeping “it in house.” Crazy thing is, Warner has been playing through an ankle fracture. So him acting humble about the whole situation is really eye opening. Many believe that Campbell was just a placeholder for Dre Greenlaw, who returned to the field after 10 months. Maybe that’s what irked Campbell.

However, there’s no point in speculating till we hear what De’Vondre has to say about himself.
