It was 1995. The Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was on a roll. They had won 3 Super Bowls in 7 years. But the owner hadn’t thought that they were entering an era of desperation. Fast forward 3 decades, they haven’t even won the NFC Championship. Now, with the new HC Brian Schottenheimer being here, he has an enormous task on his hands. Legend Michael Irvin even claimed that with such poor performances, the franchise could even lose the America’s team tag. However, the HC has a clear vision.

On February 27, he was in Indianapolis, watching the college athletes compete in a variety of events. But everyone had only one question. What’s the path ahead for the Cowboys? They recently welcomed Klayton Adams as their new offensive coordinator. He needs to guide the O-line to get the best results. The Cowboys HC was asked what he expected from his OC.

Brian Schottenheimer revealed his expectations from Adams, saying,” I think it’s kind of cool because it’s a little bit what I was doing for Mike. You know, Clayton’s going to be very impactful for me in putting together the game plan. This guy is just incredible in terms of his foundation of teaching fundamentals. And he’s been kind of a fast riser.” That’s some high praise there.

The HC has been through the same situation as he gave game plan to the HC Mike McCarthy, for 3 seasons from 2022 to 2024. In those 3 seasons, the team qualified for 2 playoffs. Adams coached Colorado players for 5 seasons from 2013 to 2018. He then came into the league.

Adams joined the Colts as their assistant offensive line coach in 2019 before they promoted him to tight ends coach in 2021. He then moved to the Cardinals as their offensive line coach in 2023 and 2024. So, the Cowboys are his first assignment as an offensive coordinator. Brian Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams are similar in how it’s their first year in the top positions.

So, the head coach promised support and added, “I’ll be good for him because I did this for the last two years with Mike. And so I think we’ll work very, very well together.” There are plenty of other coaches who need the HC’s support.

Brian Schottenheimer reveals the strategy for new staff

The Cowboys HC revealed his years-long practice of calling different coaches and finding the unknown greats. So, when he had to do it for the America’s Team, he went for the basics. He confirmed his stance on new staff and said, “I have a real big belief in fundamentals. So I think if you look at all the coaches that we’ve added, both young and old, their ability to train fundamentals in the developmental process of our players is critical.

Not only the offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, will also use the experience of former Bears HC, Matt Eberflus. He arrived at the franchise in January as their defensive coordinator. These are the two main pillars among the 17 new staff members that they have added.

The head coach also brought in Nick Sorensen as the special teams coordinator. They worked together at the Seahawks and Jaguars previously. So, two things stand out in the hirings, the working combination and the fundamentals. That’s a pretty decent approach to begin with.
