Patrick Mahomes is the dream quarterback for every coach in the league! And this statement might not be only linked because of the quarterback’s three Super Bowl championships or other accolades. It is due to reasons that reflect the professional’s on and off-the-field personality, which the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, recently revealed.
Reid recently joined Scoop City with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and former NFL QB Chase Daniel on July 16, 2024. Among multiple topics, Reid was also asked about the efforts he puts into the team every year and his inspirations for coaching. Reid admitted that most of his effort goes into helping players improve these basics and introducing new strategies to keep their minds active and engaged.
The veteran coach shared, “I was around Reggie White early in my NFL career and Brett Favre and they were great players, arguably two of the best to play the game and all they wanted from coaches standpoint, give me one more thing that even helps me be greater than what I already am. So as a coach you know you go all right I’m gonna go find that nugget and try to give it to him.”

The 66-year-old admitted that he still does that. He admitted that he wants to give him that “nugget” to make him even greater than he already is.
Reid’s dedication to improving his players and keeping their training dynamic and engaging reflects his commitment to excellence in coaching. With the duo, Mahomes and Reid’s bond, the Chiefs have been able to witness a historic page that every NFL team dreams of.

Together they have taken by storm!
Andy Reid noticed Patrick Mahomes’ impressive arm strength at Texas Tech, but what truly attracted Reid was Mahomes’ accuracy. Reid, who values quarterbacks with precision and intelligence, wanted to see if Mahomes possessed the mental acumen required for the NFL. During a pre-draft workout in 2017, Reid and the Chiefs put Mahomes through a mock install of their offense. Mahomes paid close attention, took detailed notes, and later demonstrated an exceptional ability to recall and explain the plays. With that, he showcased his sharp memory and understanding of NFL concepts. This exercise convinced Reid that Mahomes was the right choice to eventually replace the aging Pro Bowl starter Alex Smith.

Despite Smith’s success, Reid believed it was important to secure the future of the quarterback position. Even the Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, was impressed by Mahomes ability to recall specific plays and defensive coverages, a skill typical of elite quarterbacks. And hence, the team selected Mahomes at 10th overall in 2017. As a result, this marriage between Reid and Mahomes has proven to be a perfect match, leading to quarterback’s rapid rise and the Chiefs’ strong start since 2018. They eventually won three Super Bowls and four AFC Championships together.
