Is Daniel Jones worth the $160 million, or is he just another overpaid QB?

It’s the time to test and prove! The G Men are trying to build a franchise that can actually do wonders in the 2024 season. Hence, they and their manager, Joe Schoen, have believed in the quarterback, Daniel Jones, for probably one last time.

Their former running back Saquon Barkley departed the New York Giants after six seasons. As per reports, this move was a strategic choice based on the significant investment the team has made in quarterback Jones. And now as they are fully trying their luck with the quarterback, Giants’ legend Brandon Jacobs has a piece of advice for the 27-year-old.

Daniel Jones is an ‘overthinker’?

In a latest episode of All Things Covered, Giants’ former running back, Brandon Jacobs, joined Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden to have an unfiltered conversation on NFL topics, especially on Daniel Jones and his franchise. He discussed the Giants’ decision to not re-sign Saquon Barkley and the team’s belief in QB. In the conversation, Jacobs expressed his love for Barkley but acknowledged that the Giants needed to allocate resources to other areas of the team.

He noted that the team is now without a proven running game, placing more pressure on Jones. Jacobs believes, “So now you got to put so much more on Daniel Jones and is Daniel Jones really really ready for that load? I like Daniel Jones because he gives the Giants a little different. I think Daniel Jones plays in his head a little bit more than I think. He worries a little bit more about what everyone else says about him. I think he should go out and just play the game.”

The Giants’ legend also criticized the high salary given to Kenny Golladay, which limited financial flexibility. He said that despite his respect for Barkley, Jacobs would have prioritized signing him first to alleviate pressure on Jones, who still needs to prove himself worthy of his $160 million contract.

Meanwhile, the GM, Joe Schoen, has also shown his faith in Jones, but with a condition.

A tumultuous situation for Jones!

In an episode of Hard Knocks, Giants GM Joe Schoen explained why the team decided to let RB Saquon Barkley leave in free agency. Schoen highlighted that the Giants have invested heavily in quarterback Daniel Jones with a $40 million per year contract. He emphasized that they can’t justify paying a running back $12 million when they are paying so much for their quarterback. This was also because today the NFL values quarterbacks much higher than running backs.

Besides this, Schoen also made it clear that 2024 is a crucial year for Jones to prove his worth. He subtly warned, “This is the year for Daniel. The plan all along was to give him a couple years. Is he our guy for the next 10 years? Or do we need to pivot and go find someone else?

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension after a successful 2022 campaign. But if his performance is not up to the franchise and Schoen’s expectations, he would probably have to face the music.
