It’s a pretty exclusive group if you want to become a quarterback in the NFL. There can only be 32 starting quarterbacks, and that’s drawing from the entire country’s talent pool. Lots of quarterbacks switch to other roles through high school or college. If you stick it through though, you’ve got a chance of ending up a 2nd or 3rd string quarterback. That’s where Brandon Allen spent most of his career.

For 32-year-old Allen, he’s bounced around 5 different franchises in the last 9 years. He recorded a mere 9 starts across those 9 years, with him due for a 10th soon. In the two years that he had been with the San Francisco 49ers, he managed to make it from 3rd string to 2nd string. Has that come with a bump in his paycheck? Well, his 2024 1-year contract puts him at $2,020,000 with a $300,000 signing bonus.

Compare that to 2023, when he was only on $1,232,500 with no signing bonus at all. 2nd String quarterback Trey Lance was traded to the Cowboys for a 4th round pick, and that’s generally been regarded as a good trade. Allen hasn’t actually played a single game for the 49ers, but they’ll find out if he’s worth it against the Packers.

Brandon Allen’s longest streak of starts came in 2020 for the Bengals, after Joe Burrow suffered an injury to his left knee. Across the 5 games he played then, the Bengals lost 4, with the one win coming against the Texans. Yes, he underperformed back then, but you have to take into account the state of the Bengals that year. They finished dead last in the AFC North, at 4-11. Give him a chance.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Brandon Allen the most underrated backup QB, or just another journeyman in the NFL?

Have an interesting take?

It’s difficult to get a solid read on Brandon Allen’s net worth, different sources give different estimates. We do know for certain what his career earnings stand at though. Over his 9 year career, he accrued $8,928,904, with 2024 being his highest paying one so far. On top of that, according to bookingagentinfo.com, he has a brand endoresemnt deal with Blackwood For Men. We haven’t been able to verify that claim, but perhaps he’ll have more offers once he has a little time in the spotlight.

According to Sportsnaut though, we can peg him at about $3.5 million. Take that with a grain of salt, the figure’s probably gone up significantly over the course of this year. Being a married man, we figure the spending sprees will be a little restrained, and he’ll have his eye on stability. It always feels odd talking about players being lucky someone’s been injured, but Allen’s sure to make the most of this “opportunity,” call it what you will.
