Is Brandon Aiyuk's standoff with the 49ers a sign of deeper issues within the franchise?

Brandon Aiyuk’s beef with the 49ers is getting really messy. The talented wideout is basically sitting this whole training camp out, and it’s starting to annoy people. In a tweet dropped by ESPN Radio, former Cowboy Chris Canty is straight-up calling it as he sees it: Aiyuk is out of San Francisco and it’s not good for the Niners.

“He’s not playing for the 49ers this season and probably never will. Anytime you start getting the framework of deals being in place with multiple teams, it shows you the level of distraction that Aiyuk has now reached around San Francisco’s training camp,” Canty said. Yeah, it’s a cold take, but with all these trade rumors flying around, it’s hard to disagree.

Dallas’ ex-defensive end also emphasized how the San Fran team is playing hardball, demanding a king’s ransom for their wideout. Talking about how Aiyuk’s holdout has morphed into a standoff, Canty asserted, “This Brandon Aiyuk saga where it’s no longer a staring contest between the players and the team in terms of them being able to work out a long-term deal. It’s more of a staring contest between Aiyuk and the 49ers about which one’s going to conceal their demands with other teams.”

The Pats and Browns are kind of interested in Aiyuk, but they’re not exactly tripping over themselves to meet San Fran’s price. Even the Steelers are reportedly in the mix. ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky knows what’s up and he reckons the Niners are wasting Aiyuk’s potential. “If Aiyuk is not a San Francisco 49er, I would not take them to win their division,” Orlovsky said. Now, that’s a big statement.

The 49ers have got to sort this mess out soon. As for Aiyuk, he’s got to decide what kind of deal he wants after rejecting the Patriots.

Pats out on Brandon Aiyuk after he rejected the NE deal

New England Patriots are officially out of the Brandon Aiyuk contract saga after the WR turned down their offer, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco also revealed that NE had a sweet contract offer lined up, but Aiyuk wasn’t feeling it. “The Patriots had an agreement in place with the 49ers and a large offer to Aiyuk on the table, but he did not show interest in going there,” Maiocco noted.

Aiyuk, heading into the final year of his rookie deal, has asked for a trade after San Francisco couldn’t lock him in with a long-term contract. Now, the 49ers are all ears for offers and have even given Aiyuk the green light to talk to other teams.

With the Pats out, the focus shifts to Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Both teams need a boost at wide receiver, and the 26-year-old could be a major upgrade. But will they be willing to meet the Niners’ asking price? The whole situation is a mess right now, and it’s only going to get more complicated.
