Did the Patriots and Browns make a huge mistake by passing on Brandon Aiyuk?

Th͏e Brandon Aiyuk ͏trade s͏aga͏ has been one͏ of͏ the most ͏intrig͏uing͏ stories this offseason. The ͏San Fr͏ancis͏co 49ers’ wide receiver found h͏i͏mself͏ at ͏the center of a potenti͏al͏ ͏blockbuster trade that left NFL ͏͏͏community buzzing with curiosity.

The 49ers faced a dilemma at the end of Aiyuk’s contract. While there was offseason trade chatter, GM John Lynch stopped fielding calls after the draft. Apparently, they wanted to play out the season with their star wideout on his current deal. Things did not go like that, tagging him later, or even trading him by the deadline seemed unlikely. And that where a plethora of offers came rushing in.

Brandon Aiyuk’s got offers

A season with 75 catches for 1,342 yards, also adding seven touchdowns, Aiyuk made his status as one of the NFL’s top receivers. From the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots to the Pittsburgh Steelers, several teams eagerly pursued Brandon Aiyuk, drawn by his explosive talent. But the aggressive offers, especially the Patriots’ bid to make him one of the league’s highest-paid receivers, failed to make way.

The reason? The star receiver’s camp seemed focused on finding the perfect fit. Money was certainly a factor. Most importantly, he was looking for the right situation—a team where he could thrive and continue to develop as one of the premier wideouts. The Cleveland Browns’ chances of acquiring the WR always were slim. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported, the Browns “are under the impression that they are unlikely to acquire him in a trade” and that the situation remains ongoing. Evidently the 26-year-old rejected offers from both the Patriots and Browns, choosing instead to explore other options.

The two offers being turned down opened a way for the Steelers to re-enter the fray. Initially hesitant to meet the 49ers’ asking price, Steelers eventually got engaged to bring the top receiver on board. With George Pickens leading the way, the Steelers wanted Aiyuk as the final piece to complete their offense. By the start of August, reports indicated, the 49ers and Steelers had agreed to the terms of a trade, with the latter “in a good place” regarding a contract offer for Aiyuk. However, the deal still required the 49ers’ final sign-off.

Have an interesting take?

The Pittsburgh Steelers were the last standing in the pursuit of 26-year-old WR. He even identified the Steelers as a preferred destination early on, but the trade hasn’t materialized. The twist? Both Aiyuk and the 49ers weren’t ready to fully part ways. Interestingly, the timeline took an unexpected turn as the wide receiver found his way back to the Niners. The trade rumors began to lose momentum when teams saw their offers in the rearview mirror.

All eyes were on whether Aiyuk and the 49ers could come to terms and move forward together. And it seems they’re finally ready to collaborate together.

Aiyuk’s return to the 49ers practice field

While trade talks were still swirling, Aiyuk’s relationship with the 49ers was far from cutoff. Despite reports of stalled contract negotiations and the growing likelihood of a trade, San Francisco was still holding out hope that they could keep their star receiver. The team even made a long-term contract offer to Aiyuk, though he had yet to accept it.

The turning point, aka the final move, came earlier this month when the WR was spotted on the 49ers’ practice field for the first time. This development came shortly after NFL Media reported a potential rapprochement between the WR and the 49ers, suggesting that the two sides might not be as far apart as previously thought. All these developments signaled a potential resolution to the ongoing drama.
