Aiyuk snubs Patriots' $30M offer for a 'washed-up' Wilson—Smart move or career suicide?

Brandon Aiyuk’s choice of a candle over a chandelier sent shockwaves through the NFL world. As the Niners’ WR wasn’t happy with his contract situation, the New England Patriots seemed to be in an advantageous spot with their lucrative offer for Aiyuk. But, it seems like the 26-year-old has something else on his mind. “The Patriots have decided not to explore any further trade possibilities with the 49ers regarding their standout wide receiver,” tweeted Adam Schefter. With the Commanders already out of the chase and the Steelers back on track, fans are now speculating on Aiyuk’s future, as comments like “cooked his brain too” flood in.

With Aiyuk not turning up to their contract offer, it has shown the exit door to New England. The Niners’ WR wants to write a new chapter, but not with the Patriots. Aiyuk is reportedly interested in playing for the Steelers. “If not a Niners uniform, probably a Washington Commanders uniform. If not a Washington Commanders uniform, Probably a Steelers’ uniform,” said Aiyuk when he was asked about his potential home in June.

Moreover, Pittsburgh has been looking for depth in their wide receiver position for which Aiyuk’s dual-threat nature might be the best. The Steelers can afford the WR with their $16 million cap space, as it’s higher than $14.1 million, which is the value of Aiyuk’s rookie contract with the 49ers.

It seems everything is falling in place for the Steelers, as they are about to close the deal with Aiyuk. Are we going to see Brandon Aiyuk against the Texans on 10 August and will it be the right move for the WR? Well, fans have had their say.

Brandon Aiyuk: The Patriots bow out as the WR aims for the Steelers

One of the X users seemed confused about who would be the new QB for Aiyuk, “Tough to decide who I’d want throwing me the ball if I’m Aiyuk. A washed Deshaun Watson or a really washed Russell Wilson.” With a sharp decline in his final season at the Seattle Seahawks and then at the Broncos last year, Wilson is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers and fans are not convinced that he will have a great partnership with Aiyuk if the WR lands there. “So Aiyuk actively WANTS to play with Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson/Justin Fields? I’m confused at what this dude wants,” another fan chimed in.

Have an interesting take?

Russell didn’t have a strong 2023 season, as he ended up in the 21st rank and a QBR of 50.7. Moreover, the vet QB also suffered a calf injury on 24th July, which is not a good sign for the Steelers, as the season is already knocking on the door. Aiyuk’s decision seems questionable now. “Aiyuk really thinks he’s going to go far with Fields or Russell Wilson as his QB,” one netizen further trolled.

Another fan had no answer as to why the Niners WR was considering the Steelers, or any other team bar the 49ers. “The other options are washed Deshaun Watson, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson. There’s no proven good QB on that list,” the fan wrote.

Turning down the biggest money offer so you can play with Deshaun Watson/Justin Fields/Russell Wilson is certainly a decision,” wrote a fan in disbelief. Well, the Niners’ WR has rejected the $30 million offer from the Patriots. And per the NFL world, it isn’t the right choice. But, why did the Patriots stop the chase for the Niners’ WR?
