The Patriots‘ turmoil goes deeper than their losing record. Behind the scenes, tension is brewing between GM Eliot Wolf and head coach Jerod Mayo. Popular Boston reporter, Mike Giardi’s latest revelations have sent shockwaves through New England, where fans are already restless after a catastrophic season. Could this reported friction mark the end of the post-Belichick experiment?

According to Giardi, Wolf and Mayo are far from aligned. “They talk about being on the same page, but they’re not; they haven’t been.” Giardi said bluntly. “Nothing has been on the same page the entire time.” He also suggested that Wolf, if given a choice, might not have hired Mayo.

“If you ask me if Eliot Wolf was given his choice of coaches, he wouldn’t have hired Jerod Mayo,” Giardi opined. This disconnect reflects the franchise’s disorganized state, leaving fans and analysts questioning if the collaboration was doomed from the start. And all this noise is adding to a season; that’s already been a nightmare. On the other hand, Giardi has hinted at a ripple effect.

The Boston reporter hinted that owner Robert Kraft might opt for a clean slate. If Mayo is let go, Giardi believes Wolf could follow. “I think if they’re firing Jerod, they’re firing everybody,” he speculated. “I think that will just be like, ‘You know what? We screwed this whole thing up… and now we’re just gonna hit the nuclear option and we’re just gonna blow the whole thing out.'” Giardi added. This potential “nuclear option” would signify Kraft acknowledging that the current structure isn’t working.

As the Patriots prepare for their final game, fans are left wondering if this year’s failures will prompt the sweeping changes many believe are necessary. The question now is whether Kraft will prioritize continuity or “start from scratch.”

The Patriots, now on the brink of finishing with only three wins, have underperformed on every level. Rookie QB Drake Maye has been a rare bright spot, but Wolf’s draft choices beyond Maye have offered little return. Mayo, meanwhile, has faced criticism for questionable game management, including opting for a long field goal over a Hail Mary against the Colts on Sunday.

Robert Kraft faces a tough decision. Cleaning house could provide a fresh start but might deepen the instability plaguing the organization. Conversely, sticking with Wolf and Mayo offers continuity but risks further alienating a fanbase desperate for results. Former Patriots RB James White offered a more measured take.

On the “Money Down” podcast, White urged patience, emphasizing the steep learning curve for both Mayo and Wolf. “First time being a GM, first time being a head coach—the first season, you kind of learn on the fly,” White said. “Then that next season, obviously, you’ve got to see improvement.”

White defended the team’s young talent, reminding fans of his own slow start in 2014. “Guys like [Javon] Baker, [Ja’Lynn], give them some time,” he said. However, White admitted that patience would wear thin if 2025 mirrors 2024’s failures.

Sources still suggest that Kraft might back Jerod Mayo. But the question is, for how long? Removing Belichick last year uprooted the franchise’s foundation, leaving a power vacuum that hasn’t been effectively filled. Fans now demand decisive action, whether that means doubling down or starting from scratch. The clock is ticking, and the margin for error has never been slimmer.
