Is Bo Nix the next Patrick Mahomes? Broncos fans, what do you think?

Rookie QB Bo Nix’s insane no-look pass during OTAs had Patrick Surtain II totally blown away, straight-up drawing Mahomes-level hype. When Broncos’ All-Pro cornerback says Nix’s got that ‘swagger’, you know something special’s brewing in Denver!

In a sit-down on the Up and Adams Show, host Kay Adams asked the Alabama standout what he thought of his new teammate, Bo Nix. Surtain II didn’t hold back, praising Nix’s cool command and slick throws, including a jaw-dropping no-look pass that had everyone in awe.

“Yeah, I just think he’s very composed. He understands the offense very well,” he said. “I just remember the first day of OTAs, he made a no-look pass and everybody was like okay, he’s coming with that mojo, that swag, but it’s good to see him coming in with that experience and confidence… it speaks for itself.”

Nix, who dazzled during OTAs, has already made waves with his Mahomes-esque no-look pass. This play wasn’t just a flashy move—it highlighted Nix’s deep football IQ and playmaking potential. Denver’s got a proud history with QBs like John Elway and Peyton Manning. The Heisman Trophy winner already received a nod of approval from Elway himself, which has him pumped up. “It’s surreal,” Nix said about Elway’s text. “It’s like, wow, this is really happening!”

With a standout college career at Auburn and Oregon, the 24-year-old’s versatility and poise are turning heads. Broncos HC Sean Payton is equally impressed, noting the rookie’s maturity and quick learning. “It’s almost like watching a good golfer,” Payton observed, reflecting on Nix’s efficiency. “Sometimes, when you watch his game over two years, there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out, and I don’t want to use the term boring, that’s not the right term, but pretty good decisions.”

As Denver’s first-round pick, Nix is the first QB selected by Payton in the first round since Jay Cutler at No. 11 in 2006. His competition, though? Veterans Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. Ending rookie minicamp on May 12, Bo Nix is stepping into big shoes. The city’s football passion is palpable, with fans hungry for the next great QB.

When the Broncos team zeroed in on Oregon’s QB, they knew they’d hit the jackpot. HC Sean Payton and the crew were all buzzing about it. “We knew Nix was our guy,” Payton asserted. “Every time analysts Chase Daniel or Dan Orlovsky got on saying this is perfect, I would be like, ‘Shhh, can you be quiet?’” Looks like that stealth mode was spot on!

Nix wasn’t just another name on the draft board. Per Payton, the QB had topped charts in crucial areas like sack and turnover differential, accuracy, and clutch situations. “He was first in almost every passing stat we looked at,” Payton explained. His impressive Pro Day and private workouts showcased his arm strength and football intelligence.

Payton’s former Fox Sports’ colleague and Unbreakable Podcast host Jay Glazer revealed that Denver’s HC even considered a dramatic in-person draft announcement for Nix. “I talked him out of it,” Glazer shared, “but it shows how invested they were.”

Oregon HC Dan Lanning wasn’t surprised by the Broncos’ choice. “I certainly felt good about teams that wanted Bo,” Lanning told the Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson. “I thought he would go day one. I just wasn’t sure where. But I thought the Broncos had a really great shot at making it happen.”

With a 22-5 record under Lanning, Nix’s winning streak fits right in with Denver’s big dreams. This vibe suggests a seriously bright future for him in the Mile High City.
