An irreplaceable beacon of faith and mentorship has dimmed within the Auburn community. The news has sent waves through the football world. Bo Nix and his wife, Izzy, joined the outpouring for the Auburn legend Chette Williams.
Rev. Chette Williams, a beloved chaplain and former linebacker, tragically passed away, leaving the Auburn family mourning the profound loss. Bo Nix shared Auburn Football’s Instagram post honoring Rev. Chette Williams. While Izzy left a simple but heartfelt comment: “😭🤍.” The post highlighted Williams’s 26 years of service as the Tigers’ chaplain and his profound influence on countless lives. “He made a profound impact on countless people during his 26 years with our program. Brother Chette will be greatly missed 🙏” The team’s message read, capturing the sentiment felt by the Auburn community. The suddenness of Williams’s passing added to the shock.
The 61-year-old fell into Lake Martin while docking his pontoon boat. As suggested by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Tragically, he never resurfaced, and his body was recovered 2 hours later. The loss has left players, fans, and alumni grappling with disbelief and sadness. More so, because Williams’s mentorship transcended the football field. Nix also had his tryst with the great man.

Bo Nix joined Auburn in 2019, and he made an immediate impact. His standout freshman season earned him SEC Freshman of the Year honors. He even led the Tigers to a 27-21 victory over Oregon in his very first game. And also helped Auburn defeat Alabama in the Iron Bowl. However, the following seasons were challenging. Auburn struggled to maintain success under 3 different head coaches. Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury in 2021, marking his final game at Auburn.
He then got transferred to Oregon, and now he’s chasing his Super Bowl dream in his rookie year at the Broncos. Izzy’s connection with Auburn? She was an Auburn University cheerleader. And that is where she met Nix. Chette, on the other hand, shaped lives and faiths over decades.
Former Auburn wide receiver Sammie Coates reflected, “Every time I went back to The Plains, the first person I had to find was Brother Chette.” His words underscore the depth of Williams’s connections with players past and present. The news has struck a particularly deep chord among those who knew him personally. Former linebacker Bart Lester reflected on Williams’ legacy as Auburn’s “spiritual coordinator.” Bart said, “I can say without a doubt, Chette filled that role.” That was as vital to the program as any on-field strategy.
A legacy that goes beyond the game
Rev. Chette Williams’s life was a testament to the power of faith and mentorship. Before becoming Auburn’s chaplain, Williams played linebacker for the Tigers from 1982 to 1984, helping them secure 3 bowl victories. His transition from player to spiritual leader was driven by a calling to guide others, a role he fulfilled with grace for 26 years.
Williams’s influence extended far beyond football. Many players credit him for transformative moments in their lives. Former Texans WR Sammie Coates shared how Williams’s guidance led to his baptism, changing his perspective and approach to life. “After that, man, the way I looked at life, the way I did things, the way I carried myself, was based on how Brother Chette helped me so much through my journey,” Coates recalled.

In addition to his role as chaplain, Williams authored two impactful books: Hard Fighting Soldier, and The Broken Road. His writings reflected his dedication to helping others navigate trials and find strength in faith. Bart Lester remembered first encountering Williams through one of these books. “I read one of your books when I was eight years old and it had a big impact on me,” Bart told Chette once he met him.
