When the Denver Broncos moved on from Russell Wilson this offseason, they found hope in his replacement, Bo Nix. He became the overall 12th pick who signed a guaranteed $18.61 million over four years. While his college career was impressive enough with overall 113 touchdowns, his recent run at mini camp has left many stunned, including coach Sean Payton and Broncos insider Zac Stevens.
Recently, on DNVR Sports Podcast, Stevens provided an insight into the rookie quickly emerging as the centerpiece of Sean Payton’s offensive vision. Stevens said, “He’s [Bo Nix] just the direct opposite, the exact opposite of Russell Wilson.” While this statement might carry an air of confidence in the young QB, it carries its fair share of responsibility.
After all, Wilson in Denver was a disheartening story, and it remains to be seen if Nix can counter this narrative. For now, he has received a thumbs-up from coach Sean Payton, unlike Russell Wilson. Payton declared, “It’s been exactly what we saw. The only thing that I can think about that I was a little bit surprised is when we went to work him out privately and stood around him, he was bigger than I expected. But nothing in the last two days. He’s doing well.”

It’s the exact opposite of how he felt while coaching Russell Wilson. Earlier at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, Payton bluntly replied, “NO,” when questioned whether he had any anguish saying goodbye to the 35-year-old. If that is not enough, the coach also went a step ahead in praising the newly added Nix. Referring to his “two or three down the field throws,” the coach commented, “It’s almost like watching a good golfer.”
Stevens supported Payton’s sentiments and recounted instances where Nix seamlessly guided his teammates into position. “There was never a moment where Bo looked confused,” Stevens stated, “In fact, there were a lot of players that were confused on offense, and he was telling them exactly where to go. I saw that multiple times.” Bo showcased the most prolific season ever by an Oregon quarterback in 2023. He led the nation with 51 touchdowns and broke the Ducks single-season record for 364 completions, and 45 passing touchdowns while throwing three interceptions and scoring 4,508 passing yards.
For now, these statements are a testament to Nix’s understanding of Payton’s offensive system and dedication. Payton underlined the importance of finding driven players after the minicamp, “We’re going to evaluate every one of them.”

Are Bo Nix’s starting aspirations confirmed?
The rookie’s inaugural NFL practice left a lasting impression on Payton, who noted, “He’s handling the install well, he had a pretty good practice today, he’s grinding through it, he’s doing good with it.” Nix’s performance at college level has been a gateway for his accomplishments, including Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and a Heisman Trophy finalist title.
Moreover, his caliber as an accurate shooter with a 77.4% shooting percentage, makes him an ideal fit for Payton’s offense, something that sits well with the HC. This, however, doesn’t take away the status of the rookie from the player. Concerning the fresh batch of players, Payton made sure to highlight, “With young guys, the reps are important, but we’ll have a rotation and go from there.”

Nonetheless, this tough love and competition hasn’t deterred the 24-year-old who declared, “Just from what I know about his offense, it’s all about efficiency.” According to Nix, the Broncos and Payton want a “quarterback that can get the ball where it needs to go, on time, over and over and over.” And for that, the quarterback is “excited to learn and go back over all preparation just to get ready for what’s next.”
