“To be the champs, you’ve got to beat the champs, and we didn’t do that tonight.” That’s what Josh Allen said after losing to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. Once Again! Let’s be real for a moment. The Bills’ QB almost crumbled the Chiefs’ 3-peat hopes. Then came the fourth quarter and a couple of memorable fourth-down failures that squashed any chances they had for the Super Bowl spot.
The most notable failure came late in the fourth quarter when less than two minutes remained. This time, Chiefs’ DC Steve Spagnuolo turned out to be the villain in the Bills’ story. The DC sent a blitz on a fourth-and-5, causing Allen to move away from the pocket. However, the QB somehow managed to find his target, Dalton Kincaid. Alas, the tight end couldn’t corral the pass and the Bills didn’t get the ball again. And now Kincaid vented his frustration over blowing that chance, saying, “Sucks a lot.”

It was a very, very hard catch. But it would’ve put the Bills in field goal range with a chance to either tie/take the lead in the final two minutes. pic.twitter.com/K4jRtEBhZa

“Josh got the ball off. He was pressured, and it was hanging up there and I just wasn’t able to catch it,” Kincaid further said after the loss, via New York Upstate. “Right now, it obviously hurts a lot, and it’s going to linger for a while, but eventually, you’ve got to move on. And hopefully, you grow from this, and I believe that will be the case, but for the time being, it’s going to hurt a lot.” Ouch! Did he just take a jab at Josh Allen?
Looks like he did. But let’s be real. It was the Chiefs’ rushers who did a fine job and caught Allen off guard. The QB ran right into pressure but managed to dodge a sack just long enough to launch a desperate throw down the field to either tie the game or re-take a lead. Dalton Kincaid was open, turned around to spot Allen’s toss, and went for a last-ditch dive at the ball. But the throw wobbled and bounced right off his arms.
“They gave a good look,” Allen said while crediting the Kansas City team for sending the cornerback, Trent McDuffie. “Didn’t see anything in my first cadence. They were sliding left. Corner came. … Yeah.” Though Kincaid let his frustration out on the missed opportunity from Allen, the head coach had different thoughts.
Sean McDermott on Josh Allen’s fourth-down failure
Remember that line, “Never bet against Mahomes?” For Bills fans, it’s not just a catchy saying—it’s a nightmare they’ll be living with for generations. Four playoff losses against the Chiefs in last 5 years? It’s like they make it to the postseason, only to get knocked out by Mahomes and his crew every time. And this season’s loss was absolutely disappointing for Allen as he struggled with the right words to express his feelings. But hang on, Sean McDermott wasn’t afraid to call out where the Bills came up short.

“We had some plays, I thought—there was a chance to convert a fourth down, a fourth and short, and then another fourth down late in the game,” the head coach stated after the loss. “It looked like we had a chance to catch it, but it didn’t work out that way.” Umm, they indeed had a chance to catch the ball late in the fourth quarter but the tight end slipped the pass and the rest is history.
The Chiefs’ revenged their week 11 loss against the Bills and crushed their dreams of lifting the Super Bowl title. That left the Bills’ QB in a tough spot as he faced the media, clearly weighed down by the pain of the loss. “All right, guys, showing up each and every day, working as hard as they can,” said the Bills QB as he stood at the podium. “You guys truly adopted what we talked about this year going into it.

On the flip side, the Chiefs are just one step closer to make a history in the league. Patrick Mahomes promised last year, ‘We’re going for the three-peat,’ and it looks like he’s sticking to his word.
