Russell Wilson has been engulfed with speculations, predictions, and rumors all throughout this offseason. After a tough patch with the Denver Broncos, the quarterback was stuck in a tricky predicament before he got some stability with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His arrival wasn’t the simplest one, though!

Soon after the surprise announcement was made, the Steelers QB Kenny Pickett, initially meant to continue with the franchise, took his leave. It was later revealed that the QB was promised “competition,” but Wilson signed for a promised pole position. The discourse around the veteran’s contract had barely ebbed recently when another report brought a new aspect to light.

NFL Insider Dan Graziano had an interesting insight on the recent appearance on the NFL with ESPN. While discussing the possibility of Justin Fields winning the starter position this offseason, he said it was a “likely scenario” that Wilson would be cut. Moreover, keeping in mind the veteran’s minimum $1.2 million contract, the Steelers would be easily able to do that, and teams would “take bigger hits than that -on their budgets and on their Cap all the time.

Graziano further talked about the quarterback’s deal with Pittsburgh, “I was looking at his contract the other day. What’s interesting is Russell Wilson actually has a no-trade clause in his Steelers contract, which is bizarre at 1.2 million.” He went on to explain that if Fields does go on to clinch the starting position, the contract terms will allow Wilson “some control over where he goes.

With these new revelations, things change quite a bit regarding what the future could hold for the Steelers’ quarterback room. Graziano thinks the possibility of Wilson not being on the roster by the time the season starts is open, and “there’s a lot of this story to be told.” As for Fields, the 25-year-old is dead set on competing his way to the top.

While initially termed as the backup, HC Mike Tomlin said that while Wilson will lead, Fields will have room to compete. The former Bears star seems to have taken it to heart and has started the preparations right from the OTAs. “I’m definitely competing,” Fields was crystal clear in his intentions as he talked to the reporters last month.

Russ knows that,” he continued. “We’re competing against each other every day… I definitely don’t have the mindset of just sitting all year. I’m coming in every day giving it all I’ve got — pushing him to be his best, and he’s pushing me to be my best each and every day.” The dynamic Fields describes seems to be rooted in mutual respect and competitiveness, and it will be interesting to witness how it unfolds by the time the season starts.
