While we might not see Bill Belichick on the sidelines this season, it’s expected that the former New England Patriots legend might return to coach next year. The head coach would be joining Pat McAfee and the Manning brothers on Monday Night Football.

While the chances of Belichick returning to the Patriots seem close to none, there’s another franchise where he could possibly land: the New York Jets. However, an NFL analyst thinks it is unlikely despite the mutual respect between HC and Aaron Rodgers.

Why Bill Belichick might never join the Jets

One of the panelists on the Pat McAfee Show suggested that we can see Belichick in the Jets next season “given Bill Belichick’s affinity for Rodgers and Rodgers’ affinity for Belichick.” However, Mike Greenberg differs from this idea and draws an interesting and hilarious comparison to emphasize his opinion.

There’s nothing on planet Earth less likely to happen,” said Greenberg. “Aaron Rodgers is more likely to get vaccinated on national television …than Bill Belichick is to accept the coaching job of the New York Jets. Bill Belichick, for anyone who knows him, hates the Jets.” The analyst also mentioned how the former coach wouldn’t even go into the Jets’ locker room during his time with the Giants. This is reminiscent of his one-day coaching stint at the Jets’ back in 2000. Quoting “uncertainty” around his position and the “new ownership” of Woody Johnson, the former coach shockingly called it quits after just a day in New York.

Greenberg further opined that if anything, Belichick would love to join the other New York team, the Giants, having spent time there as the defensive coordinator and still being close to management. The 72-year-old was close to his then-HC, Bill Parcells, and in his documentary, ‘A Football Life,’ he expressed how the Giants are “a great organization,” and he “loved” his time there. While Belichick’s dislike of the Jets must be rock solid, according to the analyst, so is his admiration for the former Green Bay Packers quarterback.

Aaron Rodgers’ special equation with Belichick

During his appearance on the Draft broadcast with McAfee, Belichick had a special message for A-Rod. “I have so much respect for you, Aaron,” said the former HC. “Of course, I’ve never done very well against you. I always loved competing against you. You add a lot to the game.” He further wished the quarterback the best wishes to recover from his Achilles injury from the 2023 season. “Looking forward to watch you play this year and not coaching against you.

The respect and admiration extend both ways, and Rodgers himself had an endearing story to tell during his time on McAfee’s show. “We played him in 2018 and 2022 and both times he waited to make sure that he saw me after the game and I just thought that was one of the classiest things ever,” said the QB. Moreover, as the host noted, Rodgers was “the last human that he talked to on the field as New England Patriots’ head coach,” when the two met after New York’s victory in Week 18.

Bill Belichick and Aaron Rodgers both have created a legacy for themselves in the league and are considered one of the best in their roles. As the new season inches closer, we will see them in different avatars, the former head coach as an analyst on television, and A-rod finally back on the field with the Jets.
