The Chiefs were a heavyweight in the Super Bowl LIX. But they didn’t anticipate the power the Eagles came up with. Coupled with the desire for revenge, the Birds soared high from the kickoff. Andy Reid was left speechless as his side got obliterated. In the first 43 minutes of the game, they couldn’t even score, reeling at 0-34, ultimately losing 22-40. Now, another legendary coach, Bill Belichick, opened up about their problems.

During his appearance on the Let’s Go podcast on February 11, the 6-times Super Bowl-winning coach revealed a very problematic area in the Chiefs. Belichick said, “For Kansas City this year, I think it really, you know, a good place to look is the left tackle situation. Clearly, Andy (Reid) and Brett (Veach), the general manager, identified that as a problem. And they took Kingsley (Suamataia) in the first or second round, whatever it was.” That’s some Belichick wisdom.

The 2nd round pick for the Chiefs (63rd overall) played 15 games (2 starting) and recorded 195 snaps. As Belichick mentioned, Andy Reid also played Wanya Morris and Joe Thuney in the position. While Morris played 17 games (11 starting) and had 734 snaps, Thuney recorded 1117 snaps in 17 starting games. However, the makeshift arrangement didn’t work out against the Eagles.

They pressured the pocket from the first quarter itself. On the 3rd & 9th play at the 10-minute mark in the 1st quarter, Patrick Mahomes was forced to run out of the pocket and make a pass while falling. At the 9:51 mark in the 4th quarter, the Eagles DT Jalen Carter hit the QB twice on the helmet. The protection was just not there.

Belichick claimed it hurt them and added, “You get up against some teams and you can get by with that, but until you get up against the best teams or the best team, that was a problem for them.” In the first half, when the Eagles raced ahead of the Chiefs, the latter only had 23 yards compared to the rival’s 179 yards.

The loss has forced them to rethink. Some of the staff have also left the camp.

However, the coach rocked Andy Reid & co. by announcing a shocking move. A week after the loss, the coach has moved to their bitter rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, as their new defensive backs coach. Considering both teams have top-quality players, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they meet again in the 2025 postseason.

This year, the Bills registered a shocking victory over the Ravens. But the Chiefs defeated the Bills in the AFC Championship. With free agency around, expect many more changes even in the roster. It’s an interesting time.
