It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys fans aren’t happy. The team had a playoff collapse and matched their record of 12-5 of the previous season. And the rage rained down on owner Jerry Jones with calls to fire the head coach.

However, Mike McCarthy would stay for the 2024 season, and now several prime players are in an uncertain predicament. Due to their lazy offseason, contract extensions of their key players, including Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, remain unresolved. PFT’s Mike Florio recently provided some interesting insights into the future of the franchise.

Why does “cheap” Jerry Jones delay decisions?

On the Pat McAfee Show, the hosts discussed the dismal situation of the Cowboys with Florio. He expressed that the franchise is worse than last year and has “painted themselves into a corner that they don’t know how to get out of.” McAfee also pointed out how it will be a “provoking year” for McCarthy, who’s in the last year of his contract.

Florio agreed to the host’s statement and further explained how the next year could look for the team. He also opined that the reason Jones delayed decisions was that he’d rather let someone work another year despite underperforming than release them early and pay their dues. “Jerry Jones for as rich he is is cheap,” said Florio. “and he doesn’t like to pay people to not work for him. he didn’t fire McCarthy primarily because he would have to pay him to not work in 2024.

Furthermore, the sportswriter feels that the former Patriots HC Bill Belichick could be a suitable replacement for the job. “and I think Belichick, your guy, Belichick might be the ace in the hole next year if it doesn’t work out with Mccarthy.”  This is not the first time when the idea has been floated around either, with the owner himself responding to the possibility earlier this year.

“No doubt”: Jones about working with Belichick

Ever since the New England Patriots‘ legendary coach became a free agent this year after a run of 24 years with the team, whispers about his next destination were the talk of the NFL town. While a lot of teams, including the highly speculated Atlanta Falcons, passed on Belichick, the Dallas Cowboys seemed to be the perfect fit for the HC. This was because of primarily Jerry Jones, an owner who could handle the legend’s eccentric way of running things, being a close friend.

In January, the Dallas owner confirmed the same. “I know him personally, and I like him,” Jones said, as per Yahoo Sports. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None.” However, McCarthy will continue with the Cowboys for the upcoming season. As for Belichick, he will be a regular on ‘Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli’ on ESPN and potentially host his own sports podcast.
