Is comparing Jayden Daniels to Lamar Jackson fair, or is it setting him up for failure?

Why have some people suddenly turned against Jayden Daniels? The guy’s been absolutely on fire this season! Playing at that level is a huge deal for a rookie. The NFL world now knows about Jayden Daniels’ impressive dual-threat abilities. He’s gotten a ton of appreciation for it. Jayden’s strong play has been a huge part of the Commanders’ seven wins, putting them in second place in the NFC East. But recently, one of Bill Belichick’s trusted aides reportedly spotted a critical flaw in Jayden’s game. This insight could give teams a blueprint to limit Jayden’s impact, especially if they focus on exploiting that one weak spot.

The former NFL player Chris Simms identified Jayden Daniels’ “kryptonite” following the Commanders’ recent loss to the Steelers. Simms previously worked for the Patriots as a coaching assistant in 2012. He worked closely with Bill Belichick, the head coach at the time. After the close, nail-biting game against the Steelers (28-27), he was impressed by how the Steelers managed to slow down the Commanders’ QB. “Usually not a big fan of a 5-man rush but the Steelers really used it effectively to slow down Jayden Daniels”, wrote Simms on his X handle.

Jayden’s been turning heads since his time at LSU, especially for his ability to both pass and rush effectively. He took home the Heisman Trophy in 2023, cementing his place as one of the top quarterbacks in college football. After that, he is off to a great start in his NFL debut season. He has played all nine games so far and has been solid, completing 71.5% of his passes for 1,945 yards. He has thrown 9 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions.

Jayden’s strong play has had some people comparing him to Lamar Jackson. Recently, after the Commanders‘ loss to the Steelers, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin responded to questions about comparisons between Jayden Daniels and Lamar Jackson. Mike didn’t hesitate to put the reporters in their place for asking the question in the first place. “Man, be real slow comparing people to Lamar Jackson. That’s a multi-time MVP. That’s Mr. Jackson”, said Mike.

Jayden Daniels Isn’t Holding Back

Daniels might not be at Lamar Jackson’s level just yet, but there is no denying that he is a player of great caliber. His stats and the way he plays on the field speak for themselves. While he still has a lot to learn, he doesn’t shy away from the challenges. Despite the comparisons and people pointing out flaws in his game, he’s still ready to take on the Eagles in the next game.
