In the high-stakes world of NFL football, sometimes the biggest gambles come with the heftiest price tags. Just ask Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys’ ever-ambitious owner, who’s watching his $5 million investment in quarterback Trey Lance collect dust on the sidelines. As the Cowboys stumble through what’s shaping up to be one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory, a pressing question looms over AT&T Stadium.
This Tuesday, former Cowboys player Chris Canty weighed in on the situation. UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio posted on their X account, where Canty was caught saying, “Trey Lance must be the worst QB in the history of NFL. He can’t get a game” Canty also pointed out how crazy the Cowboys’ performance has been lately. He even had a word of caution for Bill Belichick, suggesting he might not want the job given how Jerry Jones runs things. Basically, Canty pointed out Jerry’s ‘abnormal’ management system for players.
Why would an HC want to put themselves in THIS position?

Canty just dropped a major warning for Bill since he’s on the potential coach list for 2025. If Jones keeps up this ‘abnormal’ situation, it’s going to be tough for Bill. As for the QB drama, Canty pointed out that Jones isn’t really taking any advice from the head coach.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, finds himself in a tricky spot, as he’ll be halfway through the season before he sees any payoff from his investment in quarterback Trey Lance. If the Cowboys were performing well and Dak Prescott was healthy, there wouldn’t be any question about putting Lance on the field. But after a tough 34-10 defeat to the Houston Texans, the Cowboys’ record has dropped to 3-7.
Cooper Rush, who stepped in for Prescott, had a solid game on Monday, throwing for 354 yards with one touchdown and interception. Still, with the team struggling, the calls for Lance to get a shot will probably grow louder as the season progresses. It’s likely that Jerry Jones is among those eager to see the 24-year-old Lance, who was brought in to help the team succeed, take the starting role. So far, though, that hasn’t happened.
Following Monday’s loss, Jones commented on his quarterback situation, and longtime team reporter Clarence Hill Jr. mentioned that he prefers Cooper Rush over Lance. So far, Lance has only thrown six regular-season passes for the Cowboys. During the 2024 preseason, Lance completed 73 of 113 passes over three games, racking up 662 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 168 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 24-run game.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Jerry Jones' management style the real reason behind the Cowboys' ongoing struggles?
Have an interesting take?
Looking ahead, the Cowboys have upcoming matchups against the Washington Commanders in Week 12 and the New York Giants on Thanksgiving, who just benched their long-time starter, Daniel Jones. If Dallas ends up at 3-9 or 4-8 by December, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Lance as the season wraps up.
But for now, hold up on the QB news. The main question is: Is Jerry Jones really going to call back Bill Belichick with his ‘abnormal’ management style?
Will Beichick be back for the Cowboys?

On Monday night’s Countdown, ESPN’s Adam Schefter talked about the coaching situation with the Dallas Cowboys and mentioned the possibility of Bill Belichick coming on board next season.”There’s a lot of chatter about what the Cowboys are planning,” Schefter noted. Some folks think Belichick might end up with the Cowboys since he was in Dallas last week.
Right now, Mike McCarthy is the head coach, but his fifth season isn’t going well at all. The Cowboys have only managed to win one playoff game under his leadership, and with Dak Prescott dealing with a hamstring injury, their playoff hopes this year look pretty bleak.
Overall, the last few years have been a letdown for the Cowboys, especially since 1995 when they haven’t made it past the second round of the playoffs. Once a powerhouse in the 90s, they’ve turned into a bit of a joke lately.

Jerry definitely has a knack for stirring the pot. So, when Bill was considering bringing Jerry on board, it raised some eyebrows. Given Jerry Jones’ cautious style when it comes to making bold moves in free agency or major hires lately, Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk thinks Jerry might just be too tight-fisted to shell out the cash for Belichick.
Given the current situation, a seasoned coach like Bill Belichick could be probably out of Jerry Jones’ hand!
