“My preference would be to sign one of those quarterbacks (Russell Wilson or Justin Fields).” Yeah, Art Rooney II made it sound like a done deal a few months ago. Fast forward, and here we are—Mike Tomlin and Co. ended up with neither. And that’s after all the buzz about the Steelers potentially bringing Fields back. So much for those speculations. And that means only one thing: ever since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers QB carousel persists.
Now, Pittsburgh is back to square one and is in pursuit of signing a veteran QB—Aaron Rodgers. Sure, the odds are favoring that the Steelers are ready to lock in Rodgers. I mean, after the Vikings already ditched the four-time MVP, and the Giants signed Jameis Winston and Wilson rather than playing a waiting game for Rodgers, A-Rod’s got just one spot left to land—unless he considers retirement.
Because let’s be real—as per The Athletic, Rodgers was expected to consider hanging up his cleats after Minnesota ditched him. Now, see it this way: Rodgers visited the Steelers’ facility a few days ago, and still, there’s no confirmation on their contract terms. Is he considering retirement? That’s where the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport comes in.

On Wednesday, Rapoport talked about the free agency on Good Morning Football, and yes, Wilson’s signing with the Big Blue eventually came up. While discussing Wilson’s contract, Rapoport came to one conclusion: “Now, Rodgers, still free, and of course, still linked very strongly to the Pittsburgh Steelers,” he said. “The fact that the Giants moved on to Russ does seem to indicate that if Rodgers decides to play in 2025, it will likely be with the Steelers.”
Well, that means the 41-year-old QB is still not certain whether he’d be playing another season or not—at least that’s what Rapoport believes. That said, it’s probably a big hurdle for Mike Tomlin. I mean, after losing Fields to the Jets and moving on from Wilson, Pittsburgh is desperate to sign Rodgers.
The team has already signed the veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf to give a better offense to Rodgers. As per CBS NFL Insider Josina Anderson, Tomlin was the one who wanted Metcalf to join the Steelers. “Tomlin was very adamant about getting DK Metcalf from what I hear.” See it this way: Tomlin wanted Metcalf, and after signing him, the Steelers felt they were “getting closer” to Rodgers.
But nope, there’s still no confirmation on Aaron Rodgers’ plans. And imagine maybe the Steelers sign Rodgers—just maybe—then what? Because he’s not going to be your long-term option. Fields was. But they didn’t give him a better opportunity. Let’s be clear on one thing: even though Pittsburgh signs Rodgers, their QB conundrum isn’t going to end. Not this year. Not so soon.

Will Aaron Rodgers be the savior for the Steelers, or just another short-term fix?

A new journey for Russell Wilson in New York
Finally, after weeks of speculations and buzz around Russell Wilson’s NFL future, the free agency ride for the 36-year-old QB comes to an end. Wilson’s probably sitting back on the couch, giving a little nod and casually wiping the sweat off his palm—like, phew, dodged that one. And why not? After spending a decade in Seattle, a couple of years in Denver, and a brief stint in Pittsburgh, the QB’s future was hanging in the air.

Fast forward, and on Tuesday, the Giants and Wilson agreed on a one-year deal worth $21 million, including $10 million guaranteed. Ever since he visited New York and Cleveland a few days ago, the rumor mill has been buzzing that he might sign a deal with the Giants. However, given the team already signed Winston, nobody could just confirm what was brewing between the two parties.

But let’s not kid ourselves—the Big Blue snagged Winston on a two-year $8 million deal. Yeah, that’s more of a backup QB wage. That means the franchise was already on a hunt to sign a veteran QB. Aaron Rodgers? Yeah, he left them on seen. Russell Wilson? Well, the guy was ready and grabbed the opportunity.

And after the news of Wilson-Giants signing hit the headlines, the veteran QB confirmed his arrival in MetLife Stadium. “Been here before… can’t wait to do it again. #MetLife,” he shared in his IG story. Besides his final few games in the last season, Wilson is coming after recording a standout season, recording 3,475 yards and 20 touchdowns.
That said, if Wilson chose New York to flip the script in the next chapter of his life, then the QB is ready.
