Is Mike Williams' trade a smart move, or are the Jets making a big mistake?

One receiver in, another one out. The Jets are busy making changes in their roster after getting their hands upon six-time Pro Bowler Davante Adams this week. It’s almost certain that Adams would be starting from the get-go, given his relationship with four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.

However, the one who would be sacrificed is WR Mike Williams, who is slated to get traded with the Chargers, Steelers or Saints, among those interested in securing his services. Well, it doesn’t really surprise us, as Williams wasn’t having a great time in New York this season. Over the six games he played in green and white, the Jets WR only racked up 10 catches for 145 yards.

He even missed Wednesday’s training session, citing personal problems, thereby throwing shade on his time in New York. Although interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich didn’t really offer any explanation for his absence, it could stem from his potential exit from the Jets. Even ESPN’s Adam Schefter, on Get UP ESPN, said, “Something’s going on in New York” while channeling his windy fingers for showing us a potential trade situation building up.

Similar to Aaron Rodgers, Williams was coming off a season-ending ACL injury he suffered against the Vikings last season. This ruled him out of 14 games last year, eventually ending his seven-year stay with the Los Angeles Chargers. Having signed with the Jets this offseason, Williams is nowhere near his best as he continues to struggle with Rodgers throwing from center.

The six games he has played with A-Rod, the 30-year-old has been targeted only 14 times. With a measly 14.5 yards per catch average, his contributions in New York weren’t really up to the mark. Well, him being intercepted against the Bills on Monday Night Football didn’t really do justice to his brief time in New York. As Rodgers lashed out at his teammate after the Jets were condemned to their third straight loss this season.

Aaron Rodgers opens up on his criticism of Mike Williams

Rodgers was visibly fuming after the Bills game as he called it a golden opportunity missed, “We need to get going. This was a golden opportunity. Some games you win in the NFL, and some games you give away. This was a giveaway.” While doing so, he also called out his teammate Williams for his decision-making at the end zone.

Throwing his final pass that could have landed at the red zone, Rodgers said, “It’s two vertical routes. Allen Lazard is down the seam, and Mike’s down the red line. I’m looking at Allen. He puts his hand up, and three guys go with him. So, I’m throwing a no-look to the red line. And when I peek my eyes back there, Williams is running an in-breaker. He’s got to be on the red line.”

Since this public outburst of emotions, A-Rod did double-down on the criticism subjected towards Williams, “I think if you watch my press conferences, I’ve started with myself when I’ve made mistakes. That’s the standard for everybody. There were a lot of mistakes throughout the night, but if you’re looking at just that play, that’s what the question was, what happened on that play.” Although Rodgers may have addressed the criticism he threw towards Williams, his time in New York may be over. With Davante Adams joining the receiver room, it doesn’t look like Aaron would have to criticize him anymore.

But the question is, did Williams deserve better, considering he is being judged only on six games this year? Guess we will find out if he does get traded within the next few weeks in the NFL.
