On January 5, the Bears beat the Packers 24-22. Many fans weren’t expecting this, but Da Bears celebrated the victory. They snapped their 10-game losing streak this season. Now, the franchise management is working on the rebuild. GM Ryan Poles is vetting various candidates such as Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, and Pete Carroll. But one name amazed everyone.

It’s Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy! According to Adam Schefter, the Bears sent a request to the Cowboys, allowing them to interview McCarthy. No one expected this. But one thing is obvious, Jerry Jones has made no decision about his coach’s future. And his contract ends on January 14. However, it’s the offseason for teams like the Bears who are out of the playoffs.

They had bumps in coaching since firing Matt Eberflus after the week 13 loss against the Lions. He fumbled with the clock management. The franchise promoted Thomas Brown from OC to the HC. But he also failed and could only win one game. This led them to search for a new coach.

Ryan Poles seems impressed with McCarthy’s record. During his stint with the Packers, Mike McCarthy did an overall fair job. With a Super Bowl in 2010, they qualified for playoffs in 8 of 12 seasons. In 2020, he arrived at the Cowboys, where he couldn’t replicate the success. In 5 years, they qualified for the playoffs thrice, but couldn’t reach the Super Bowl, let alone winning it.

It looks more like a pattern for him. He needs time and resources to transform a locker room. But there is another underlying issue. The Bears need someone who could ease things for their rookie Caleb Williams. And McCarthy hasn’t worked much with the rookies except Aaron Rodgers, who also won only one Super Bowl despite his talent.

What’s your perspective on:

Is hiring Mike McCarthy a genius move or a disaster waiting to happen for the Bears?

Have an interesting take?

However, Fans aren’t happy. They don’t want the Cowboys HC at the Bears. And they openly criticized this move.

Fans protest Mike McCarthy as potential Bears HC

While Ryan Poles hasn’t said anything about it, it’s clear that they would like a Super Bowl-winning coach. But one fan didn’t like it and said, “Please no… I didn’t think they could find a candidate lower than Kafka on the list. .. They did!” Another fan made his feelings clear about Mike McCarthy with only one word tweet that was, “Nooooooooooo!!!!!!” Well, they fired Matt Eberflus mid-season. Fans definitely want thorough research done on a coach’s profile before hiring a new one.

Another fan also made his choice for the head coaching jobs and mentioned, “Ben Johnson or (Todd) Monken.” His wish could also be fulfilled. The Bears have submitted a request to interview Brian Flores, Todd Monken, and Arthur Smith for the job of head coach. While Ben Johnson has given no interview yet, he is also a potential candidate.

Brian Flores doesn’t have a great record as the Dolphins head coach from 2019 to 2021. They didn’t qualify for playoffs even once. Todd Monken has performed impressively as the Ravens‘ OC. Since joining the franchise in 2023, he has led them to playoffs twice in a row. But we can’t ignore that they also have some quality players. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are among the best in the league right now.

Ben Johnson has done a good job as the Lions OC too. They clinched the NFC top seed after defeating the Vikings in the season finale. But both Johnson and Monken don’t have head coach experience in the NFL. That’s a different ball game.

A disappointed fan who had lost all hope in the franchise wrote, “Why…why do I know we are about to screw a new coach hire all over again 😫” Those are some big words. This shows fans would prefer Thomas Brown to continue his job. Whoever the new head coach will be, he has to win the confidence of the fans. That would be one factor to take the team forward.
