Two Achilles injuries and still going strong—Is Cam Akers the toughest player in the NFL?

Cam Akers is on a mission. Two Achilles tears would’ve ended most players’ careers, but the Texans’ running back is defying the odds. The guy who once looked like a future superstar is back, and he’s hungry.

In a recent video post shared by sportswriter Aaron Wilson on his Twitter handle, Houston’s RB Akers opened up on his comeback from two Achilles injuries. “I’m just blessed. God’s blessing me and I don’t want this to be my story. I wanna come back and show everyone who I am,” asserted the Seminoles’ product.

The 25-year-old running back exploded onto the scene as a rookie, flashing game-breaking ability. But then came the nightmare: the Achilles injuries. Most guys would’ve hung up their cleats, but not Akers, as he said with determination in his voice: “Playing with these guys and training camp reminded me that I wanna keep going. I don’t wanna be a one-time player.”

The Texans saw something special in him. Having started his career with the Rams in 2020, Akers played four seasons with the team, including the 2021 season when he first tore his Achilles. Two years later, he was traded to the Vikings, where the second Achilles injury cut his season short. Now with the Texans, the Super Bowl LVI champ’s ready to make a comeback.

Houston offered him a lifeline when others wouldn’t. “It’s closer to home,” Akers explained about joining the Texans. But it’s more than just geography. He sees a winning team, a “super team” as he calls it. “Everything’s in place—we got the coaches, the quarterbacks, receivers, defense—everyone’s here. I just wanna play my part!”

Now, after a touchdown in the Hall of Fame game, Akers is proving he’s back.

Cam Akers shines in Hall Of Fame game against the Bears

Two Achilles injuries and still going strong—Is Cam Akers the toughest player in the NFL?

Have an interesting take?

The Texans running back showed flashes of his pre-injury form in the Hall of Fame game against the Bears. “I just credit the team for giving me an opportunity and all the praise to the Lord,” Akers told NFL Network Chief National Reporter Steve Wyche after the game. “Two Achilles (injuries) in. Most people wouldn’t be on the field again.”

The numbers tell a story too. Five carries for 13 yards with a long of seven yards—a solid average. Akers made several keen moves, concluding with a 4-yard touchdown reception on a 70-yard drive. But it was his receiving skills that really popped. Two catches, 18 yards, including a touchdown. The Texans’ offense looked sharp overall, with Akers as a key cog!

But Chicago’s offense also rolled darn well with QB Brett Rypien. His 9-yard pass to Collin Johnson pushed the Bears ahead, 21-17, right out of halftime. Last season’s AFC South Champs finished off with a 74-yard drive capped by Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 33-yard field goal.

Even though Houston didn’t snag the win, the running back and the offense were a serious force. If this game’s any hint, Cam Akers is set to reclaim his spot as one of the league’s top running backs.
