The Jets-Giants rivalry is one of the classic feuds that might never end. Both teams always manage to stay in the headlines because of this. And this time, it’s rookie Malik Nabers’ conflict with Sauce Gardner. The Jets couldn’t resist mocking the Giants after their loss in a joint practice. Gardner even waved at the Giants like he was saying goodbye. And, of course, it became a talking point.
Giants’ 2024 first-round pick and wide receiver, Nabers, didn’t hold back and replied to the cornerback’s taunting antics during their practice on Wednesday, August 21. He told reporters, “They can do that. I mean, they won on the day. Their defense came out and executed well. We beat ourselves today,” expressing his disappointment after losing.

However, this rivalry is not very new. It has been going on for decades. Even in 1974, when both teams struggled through a rough season, they went head-to-head to prove themselves in “The Battle of New York” at the Yale Bowl. Both teams have shared a home stadium since 1984. So, why the tension? Well, the New York Giants have always been more successful of the two teams. While, the New York Jets have been called the “Other” New York team by Giants fans. It’s thanks to this rivalry, that the teams always try to outdo the other, be it games or practise sessions.
The Giants’ offense performed well, but they couldn’t make any big plays. Their first-team defense had a tough time handling the Jets’ passing game, trying to cover WR Garrett Wilson. Things got worse in their final 2-minute drill when the Giants went four-and-out. Malik even dropped a 40-yard touchdown pass on 2nd-and-7, and the drive wrapped up with two incompletions to Darius Slayton. But the Jets seemed intent on taking the Giants down. And QB Aaron Rodgers made it easier by finishing with 3 touchdowns.
After they lost, the Jets started chirping, resulting in Nabers reacting to the whole situation. However, Jets’ Chuck Clark explained whatever happened on the field, stating the Jets proved they are the ‘New York team’.

What’s your perspective on:
Did the Giants choke under pressure, or are the Jets just too dominant this season?
Have an interesting take?
Ater Malik Nabers shared his views, Jets’ safety Clark had a conversation with reporters and said, “Jets players were throwing around trash talk like ‘Who’s the team of New York?.” and proudly replied, “Us” after winning the match. And it was also justified after the Jets won despite the tough game. They came and won with a solid 8-25 win, and they weren’t shy about celebrating it.

After all the drama, Giants HC Brian Daboll had some good things to say about the Jets’ defense: “They play fast, they’re aggressive.” He praised the Jets, saying they tend to stick to their game, do it quickly, and have a lot of good players. It showed there’s still mutual respect between the teams, despite the rivalry.
Even though the teams are rivals, fans enjoy seeing the team go against other. And there’s been plenty of trash talk between the teams over the years. It has escalated to a point that in 2022, two Giants fans filed a lawsuit asking Jets to remove “New York” from their name. So yeah, the feud is not just limited to the teams, and considering they share the same fanbase and even compete for the same dollars, there’s always going to be some conflict.
