Baker Mayfield is feeling the love. Not just from Bucs fans, but from his ride-or-die teammate, Tristan Wirfs! The dynamic duo is not only crushing it on-field but also navigating the exciting waters of fatherhood together. Talk about a touchdown in both life and football!
In a tweet shared by American sportscaster Sara Walsch, the Bucs’ QB dished about his friendship with Wirfs and what’s next for him. Mayfield revealed, “It’s pure joy. Tristan and I have become so close… going through new life stages together and being able to extend here. It’s just unbelievable; the new chapter of my life, and the fact that I get to do it with my best friend is just awesome.”

It’s a bromance for the ages. This QB-OT duo has been inseparable ever since Mayfield landed in Tampa. All through the 2023–24 season, these two players have been singing each other’s praises. Even at this season’s Pro Bowl, the former Heisman Trophy winner opened up about how the two went from strangers to ‘best friends’ in no time.
Now, with baby girls on the way (within a week of each other, no less!), their friendship is about to level up. “We were having little girls. I found out the night he told me, and we haven’t even told family yet,” Mayfield revealed.

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Per sports writer and reporter Adam Schefter, the Bucs have officially agreed to sign OT Wirfs on a five-year, $140,63M contract extension, making him the league’s highest-paid offensive lineman. Guess Tampa Bay’s indeed locking down their offensive line!
Buccaneers lock down their franchise left tackle with Tristan Wirfs
The Bucs have signed All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs to a monster five-year, $140.63M extension—with $88.24M in guaranteed money and $28.1M average annual value. Adam Schefter noted that Wirfs’ new deal with the Tampa Bay team edged out Penei Sewell’s four-year, $112M extension with the Lions.

Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Wirfs had been eyeing a payday and wasn’t shy about it. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported back in May that his long-term future with the team was up in the air since he missed training camp. But the Bucs got the hint and decided to shell out the big bucks. This deal keeps the former first-round pick in Tampa Bay through the 2029 season.
At just 25 years old, Tristan Wirfs is already a three-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champ. Locking him up long-term is huge for a Bucs team looking to stay competitive in the NFC South.
