At this point, it’s safe to say Baker Mayfield has a love-and-hate relationship with his offensive coordinators. Like, who in their right mind would have imagined playing under nine different OCs in just eight seasons in the NFL? With the Buccaneers alone, he’s now on his third coordinator in three seasons. First, it was Dave Canales who left for the Panthers’ head coaching gig. Then, in some astonishing circumstances, Mayfield also lost Liam Coen to the Jaguars before next season. Now, with the latest installment of a first-year OC Josh Grizzard, it looks like Mayfield is not backing up from another new adventure.

When asked to express his thoughts on the idea that Grizzard has never called plays before, Baker Mayfield seemingly gave a vote of confidence on Grizzard’s capabilities. “I mean, Dave hadn’t called plays until Tampa, but you get used to it. We were in every meeting together, so how involved he was in the game and whatnot. I know that he’s going to be a good playcaller. You can just sense that already.” See, Canales spent almost 12 years with the Seahawks in different offensive roles. But, of course, he was never an OC.

However, when he became one, his impact on Baker Mayfield was quite evident. The QB was an instant hit, posting a career-high 28 TD passes and over 4,000 passing yards. Under his tutelage, the Bucs also captured the NFC South title with a 9-8 record. Then, it was Coen’s turn to work his magic on Mayfield after serving a single season as the Rams OC in 2022. Well, he took Mayfield’s game to a level no one probably saw it coming. The Bucs QB landed 41 TD passes and an exact 4,500 passing yards. And just like the previous season, they also wrapped the NFC South title with a 10-7 record.

As for Grizzard, it’s not like he is a complete novice. He was Coen’s right-hand man responsible for calling third downs. Sometimes, Grizzard was up there in the coaching booth trying to find the best possible route of attack. The Bucs’ new offensive coordinator used to serve as the eye from the sky, finding holes in opposition defenses.

Even left tackle Tristan Wirfs knows what Grizzard is actually capable of, “Grizz knows this system like the back of his hand. He’s a wizard…He knows what to do. He knows what to call.” But Grizzard could soon lose one of his weapons of wizardry before he even starts calling the plays. Steelers are said to be a landing spot for Chris Godwin, whose Tampa Bay contract is soon expiring.

Chris Godwin to Pittsburgh Steelers looks like a real possibility

See, the release of outside linebacker Preston Smith has helped the Steelers extend their cap space by over $53M. And that could probably help them poach long-time Tampa Bay receiver Chris Godwin. His 3-year $60M contract is expiring this offseason. So, with Godwin set to his unrestricted free agency, 33rd Team’s Tyler Brooke believes the 28-year-old could be a great fit for the Steelers.

Brooke thinks Godwin could help the Steelers massively with his explosive plays alongside George Pickens on the offense. “Pairing Godwin with a deep-threat outside receiver. George Pickens thrives in those situations, but the lack of firepower on the rest of the Steelers’ offense has allowed opponents to shut down their No.1 option, leading to frustration and a lack of explosive plays and points on the board.”

Pickens was coming off a career year in 2023, where he was averaging 18.1 yards per catch. However, this season, that number rifled down to just 15.3, his lowest since entering the league in 2022. As for Godwin, he was on his way to an explosive year until a dislocated ankle took everything away. In just 7 weeks, he caught 50 catches for 576 yards and five TDs.

So, Godwin can clearly offer the Steelers that spark they have missed on the offense. Of course, they have to sort out their QB room before doubling down on Godwin. Because he wouldn’t want to wear black and gold until he knew whom he would be getting the balls from.
