When former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield first crossed paths with Emily Wilkinson in 2017, their story wasn’t exactly love at first sight. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Akin to a romance novel where the leading lady is determined to resist the charming athlete’s advances, Wilkinson had her guard up, armed with preconceived notions. “Typical playboy athletes,” Emily had told herself after meeting her future husband for the first time through a mutual friend. However, life has a funny way of unraveling our carefully constructed assumptions. And Emily soon found herself surrounded by unforeseen circumstances…
What started as hesitation transformed into one of the NFL’s most talked-about relationships. A few months after they first met, the then University of Oklahoma quarterback invited Wilkinson to attend the Rose Bowl game, during a lunch date a day prior. Emily, though, didn’t have much hope assuming that Mayfield would perhaps be more obsessed with himself and his games. On the contrary, the signal-caller surprised her by asking about her life and future plans. And all it took was the next three days for them to realize that it was meant to be. “We haven’t really been apart since,” Emily once revealed.
The couple got engaged after just six months of dating, and later got married in a lavish wedding in July 2019. In April 2024, they also welcomed a baby girl Kova Jade Mayfield. Nothing less than a fairytale love story, right? Unfortunately, that was far from the truth back then. And now, years later, they are finally ready to talk about their marital struggles as Mayfield confessed about the “darker” side.

This Sunday, Christian Athletes dropped some eye-opening revelations on their X account about Baker Mayfield’s marriage. The QB himself opened up about it, with a five-word message first: “God taught me a lesson.” Then he added, “He had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize that I’m more than a football player. There’s much more going on than the game of football, and for me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom, and that was it. It wasn’t just football. It was in our marriage.”
Following the heartbreaking confession, the 29-year-old started to peel back the layers of his relationship, sharing, “We weren’t doing well at all. At this time, we were trying to have kids. Wasn’t going well. And so that was when we dove into PAO. But I remember a couple [of] years ago, we talked about…There’s that 99 percent of you…that you could put on the facade. As a guy you put on the mask. But behind closed doors, who are you really? What are you hiding? Are you being vulnerable? And until my career got stripped down, I was hiding a lot.”

In De͏cember 2023, they shared that ͏they’re ex͏pecting their first child. Everything seemed smooth sailing for Baker—until a whirlwind of challenges hit, testing the very heart of his marriage.
In November 2024, the Bucs’ player filed a lawsuit against his father’s company, Canwood Capital, for allegedly transferring $12 million from his and Emily’s accounts “without authorization” from 2018 to 2021. While the two parties had reached a settlement where James Mayfield said he would pay it back in instalments, the QB claims he never received any money back. However, like a light at the end of the tunnel, the couple found the way back to the life they had always wanted. Talking about it, the player revealed, “And then, for me to climb back up, I had to dive into word, and accept the grace. And that was something that was really, really hard for me. And, when I eventually did, I started to see things from a different viewpoint. And that was the biggest change in my life. And that’s a couple of years ago. I think the best part that I’ve learned throughout the process is constant work.”
