The Chiefs are taking over KC schools. The Vince Lombardi Trophy is coming back to KC for the second straight time. And that’s the reason for major celebrations. There are parades planned for the victors representing their city in the NFL. The parade is set to take place a few hours from now. But here’s the catch: it is a weekday. And that means children will have school. Which in turn means that parents will be occupied.
But some schools are not going to let go of this historic moment. However, some others want to prioritize a day of education over a day of celebration for the city students.

The day after the Kansas City Chiefs clinched their Super Bowl victory, things took an unexpected turn for the Olathe and Blue Valley school districts. The initial plan was to proceed with classes on Wednesday. Last week, Olathe had firmly stated that classes would go on as scheduled, parade or no parade. Similarly, late Monday morning, Blue Valley echoed the sentiment, intending to keep kids in school.
However, the fever surrounding the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl win led Johnson County districts to reconsider their stance on holding classes during the celebratory parade. “As we approach the Super Bowl parade this Wednesday, we are unfortunately experiencing a significant strain on our system that is impacting staffing, student attendance, and transportation,” expressed Olathe officials in a news release.
They emphasized their initial intention to prioritize education but ultimately decided to cancel classes in light of the challenges they faced.

Some schools will remain open
Many other districts in the Kansas City area, including Shawnee Mission, opted to cancel classes to allow families and staff to join the parade festivities. Despite citing the importance of maintaining student learning and the numerous snow days already taken this school year, students from both districts protested the decisions. A Change.org petition urging Blue Valley to cancel classes garnered over 3,900 signatures by Monday afternoon.
With just a few hours left, it’s highly unlikely that the school will reverse its decision. Unfortunately for the students, they will have to choose between classes or the Chiefs victory parade. As KC celebrates its first-ever second-straight Super Bowl win and fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy, what decision will the kids make?
