“I don’t have any urgency to get it done.” Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made this statement when the reporters asked him about CeeDee Lamb’s contract extension. Lamb is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will earn around $17.99 million this year. So, it is automatically an “urgency.”
But Jones’ strange comments have left many speechless, including Lamb, who, 10 minutes after Jones’ comments, took a dig at him with the word “lol.” As we mentioned earlier, this turned out to be astonishing for many. NFL legend Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson too joined this discussion by slamming the owner.

Ahead of the 2024 offseason, Jerry Jones mentioned he wants “all-in” for another comeback next season. However, with many players like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in their final years and waiting for contract extensions, his “all-in” philosophy seems to have faded away. In the latest episode of Nightcap on August 8, 2024, Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson discussed the late situation of the Cowboys.
During the discussion, Johnson pointed out, “I say it over and over and over. When it was time for Dez [Bryant] to get paid the same thing, when it’s time for Ezekiel [Elliott] to get paid the same thing,” stressing on tight negotiations.
“Are you really serious about winning? You need your best player outside of that, in camp building, that chemistry and that rapport to make sure when the season does start you hit the ground running,” mentioned Johnson.

Hence, he questioned Jones’ commitment to winning, arguing he would prioritize having his best players, such as Lamb, ready and fully engaged in training camp if he was serious. Lamb has skipped the Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp in June, and the training camps in July. He is now subjected to pay a hefty fine of over $100,000.
In the podcast episode, Johnson also said that he didn’t see any sign of Jones’ “all-in” with these left-out contracts that still need a discussion. Furthermore, he pointed out that if this boils up, it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Lamb would look to be traded. Former WR further emphasized that the market sets the value for players like Lamb, and if the Cowboys aren’t willing to pay him what he deserves, another team will poach him away.
Meanwhile, on the field, Lamb led the league in receptions (135) in 2023, with 7.94 receptions per game. Additionally, he has topped 1,100 yards receiving in each of the past three seasons, setting a career-high with 1,749 yards in 2023.
Hence, as the market is high for wide receivers after Justin Jefferson’s massive contract worth $140 million for 4 years, Lamb too thinks he deserves a pay raise. Yet, Jerry Jones’ “no urgency” comments have left, everyone confused.
The pressure might build soon if the needle doesn’t move!
CeeDee Lamb has been absent from the Cowboys training camp for two weeks, and his contract situation has become a hot topic. Fans and the team are anxiously waiting to see when, or if, his contract will be finalized, and for how much. The tensions visibly started when one fan brought a sign to a Cowboys practice.
That placard reads, “Hey Jerry, Pay CeeDee!” This highlights the frustration and anticipation surrounding Lamb’s contract talks. However, to address this matter, the Cowboys brought their coach Mike McCarthy. Carefully stating on the matter, McCarthy said, it’s a “business matter,” and that the team is ready to work with Lamb once he returns. But will the team pay Lamb?
McCarthy even made a diplomatic statement saying, “We all understand that he’s putting in the time now. When he gets here, we’ll take that. We’ve also got to be smart when he gets here. We’ve got to ramp him up and get him ready to go. There’s a lot of investment in CeeDee…So, we have a good foundation to lean on.”

However, Jones’ ‘careless’ remarks have turned the table upside down for all. But why did he say that? Well, the reporters asked the billionaire owner the same question. To which he gave a cold reply, saying, “I went to high school. I went to college. I don’t know why I said it. I don’t have a sense of urgency about getting it done. Give any reason you want. I was at Nobu two days ago. Put that as a reason.”
His negligence can pressure the locker room, as his teammates like Brandin Cooks and Ezekiel Elliott eagerly wait for Lamb to join in. If he doesn’t join, the entire locker room might become stressed out, as they weren’t expecting this blow, at least not right now.

Lamb is coming off one of the best receiving seasons in Cowboys history. He led the NFL with 135 receptions and was second in the league with 1,749 yards, scoring 12 touchdowns. As Dak Prescott’s top target, Lamb has proven to be a versatile and dangerous weapon all over the field.
jacIf he doesn’t come back; the Cowboys would likely have to face the music.
