This season was supposed to be an optimistic one for Antonio Pierce after taking up the head coach position of the Las Vegas Raiders. But it turned into a legal nightmare even before the first game could commence. Antonio’s wife, Jocelyn, filed for bankruptcy in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona on June 12. According to the filing, Antonio is subject to judgment amounting to more than $28 million. That is more than Pierce’s estimated net worth of $25 million.

Taking all these together, the situation might take a turn as if the coach is working for free this season since the money will be used to overcome the loans. It was at this point Jocelyn filed bankruptcy in an attempt to “protect her assets and those of the marital community.” The events have unfolded in the light of a bad car dealership investment, reportedly done in the 2010s.

This misadventure resulted in default loans. Antonio Pierce was named as a guarantor of judgments. The Lenders now seek to satisfy the judgments from marital assets. Two of the companies involved in the matter are Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation and Hyundai Capital America – the two companies hold $23 million and $4.5 million judgments respectively. These companies have attempted to look at the head coach’s Raiders’ wages.

In the filing, Jocelyn stated that Antonio’s role in the investment was merely as a “passive investor,” as reported by sources. This accounted for no oversight or management of the businesses’ affairs. However, despite this, “Mr. Pierce was asked to sign various documents. Although the Debtor has no direct knowledge of the events, personal guaranties were later produced bearing Mr. Pierce’s name.”

To further clear her stance, Jocelyn has expressed through documents that “she did not sign any personal guaranty on the loans.” She has asked for and been granted an extension until July 12 so that she can gather all information concerning the community property while looking after her children and home. “A status conference on the matter is scheduled for July 24 in Phoenix,” according to Las Vegas Review Journal. Meanwhile, the Raiders’ spokesperson and Pierce’s agent have denied commenting anything about the matter.

This isn’t the first time the coach has faced such legal battles. Back in 2020, Antonio Pierce was listed as a defendant in a class-action lawsuit. This took place in Pennsylvania where it was stressed that the coach along with other entities acclaimed a “‘Set for Life Program’ in 2018 despite becoming aware the businesses would not survive.” Astonishingly, the case is still open, according to sources. While off the field, Antonio is reeling with controversy, the Super Bowl champion’s professional life is going through one of the most successful phases.

As the rulings await, Antonio Pierce will take up the role of a head coach for the first time in 2024. He was promoted to that position in January. The Raiders recruited him as their linebackers coach in 2022. In that role, he managed to post a 5-4 record. In February, Pierce opened up about his feelings on the new role during an appearance on the Raiders DE Maxx Crosby’s podcast, “I walked outside, looked up to the sky, and I was just thankful.” Indeed, he had every reason for that, given the kind of backing he received from the team.

One of Antonio’s vocal supporters was surely Maxx Crosby. The three-time Pro Bowler was even ready to explore a trade if Antonio were not recruited. And that was not without a reason.

“Me and him have that — you know when you’re around another alpha dog? You know when they walk in the room. So me and him immediately knew we showed each other respect. Coach was always testing me … he knows how to get under my skin and I know how to get under his skin, and he knows how to get the best out of me,” Crosby had said in February. Former defensive end Justin Tuck thinks the same.

“He doesn’t have NFL head coaching experience. He doesn’t fit the mold of what most people would say is NFL head coach material. But I know a few things about AP, and it’s that he has a passion for the game and a passion to lead and develop players,” Tuck had said in a conversation with raiders.com. With that, Antonio has lofty visions for himself.

“Just like I thought I’d become professional player and thought I’d win a Super Bowl one day – there’s no difference in the position I’m in now. I see myself in this position, and hopefully one day sitting at that podium with the Lombardi Trophy next to me too. That’s my goal. Until that happens, I’m not going to stop,” Pierce had said about his new job. It remains to be seen if he can overcome the debacle with a similar spirit.
