Is the NFL turning a blind eye to player misconduct, or are they just overwhelmed by scandals?

Just before the Miami Dolphins’ NFL campaign got underway last month, their star WR Tyreek Hill was detained outside the Hard Rock Stadium for a speeding violation. Though he was released shortly afterward, the bodycam footage revealed the forceful actions of one of the officers, which were termed “concerning,” by Miami-Dade County’s Chief of Public Safety. The officer was put on administrative leave with the Dolphins fanbase up in arms. However, just over a month after this incident, another NFL player has alleged discrimination by the cops.

Following his arrest, Hill had expressed his concern over how things could have been different if he had not been an NFL player. He also called for more accountability. His agent Drew Rosenhaus also shared his surprise at how quickly things escalated and said the whole ordeal left him “very troubled.”

Even though the tensions in that case have simmered down a little, New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore tweeted about his unsavory recent experience with the police, once again drawing attention to their conduct.

He wrote on X on early Wednesday morning, “I just experienced for the first time 5 Providence cops being very unprofessional racism at it’s finest.” Barmore didn’t provide details of what exactly happened and where in Providence the alleged racist incident took place. However, a partially redacted incident report provided to DailyMail.com reveals what went down.

The report details that Barmore was stopped for a traffic violation around 1 am on Wednesday. He is accused of operating an unregistered vehicle, failing to display plates properly, and driving with an expired registration. Barmore is listed as the suspect in the report. It further adds that officers towed his Jeep afterward.

Have an interesting take?

Barmore has had a difficult last few months as he was diagnosed with blood clots during the pre-season. His condition slowly improved through the first six weeks of the season as he rejoined the team.

As for the latest incident, this isn’t the first time a Pats player has found himself in a tangle with the law. Rookie receiver Javon Baker went on Instagram live in September complaining about a police officer pulling him over for a traffic violation. “Some hating-a** police officers in Massachusetts,” Baker said in the video.

Barmore found support under his tweet from the fans while the Patriots organization hasn’t said anything about the incident yet. In Tyreek Hill’s case, the Miami Dolphins were quick to side with their player. His arrest also led to the player raising an alarming question regarding the alleged discrimination by the police.

Tyreek Hill had an unsettling question over a controversial arrest

The bodycam footage from the incident revealed how things escalated between Hill and the Miami-Dade police officers. The video shows a police officer questioning the wide receiver as to why he doesn’t have his seatbelt. He knocks on his car window asking him to roll it down. Hill hands over his driver’s license to the officer, but repeatedly tells him not to knock on his window.

The video then shows Hill pulling up his window as the officer demands him to pull it down and after Hill delays the action, the officer asks him to move out of the car. The police officer removes Hill from his car, before forcing him to the pavement and putting him in handcuffs while kneeling on his back.

He was let go after one of the police officers recognized him and given some citations after a discussion. However, Hill was left shaken by the incident and in an interview with CNN he raised his concern about what would have happened had he not been such a popular figure.

He said, “If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, worst-case scenario, we would have had a different article: ‘Tyreek Hill got shot in front of Hard Rock Stadium’ … or ‘Tyreek Hill put in handcuffs, taken in and booked.’ It’s crazy that me and family had to go through this.”

Miami Dolphins supported the player in their statement noting they were “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday’s game.” They also emphasized that it is “both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace, as we are grateful this one did.”

It will be interesting to see the stance the Patriots will take once more details from the Christian Barmore incident and alleged racism emerge.
