Andy Reid made a great offensive lineman steal in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by signing Ohio OT Josh Simmons. Fans hoped that more help for Patrick Mahomes was incoming. Alas, the Chiefs Kingdom is still recovering from the Philly demolition. New Orleans witnessed a historic Super Bowl LIX game as the Eagles avenged their SB LVII loss by defeating the AFC West team while sacking Mahomes in historic proportions. Cause and effect? A full-on focus on the defensive players in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The second day of the Chiefs’ draft became a highlight only for one reason. Andy Reid went crazy behind defensive picks. He first drafted Tennessee Volunteers DT Omarr Norman-Lott in the 2nd round (63rd overall), Louisville Cardinals DE Ashton Gillotte in the 3rd round (66th overall), and California CB Nohl Williams in the 3rd round (85th overall).

Williams also played 3 seasons with the UNLV Rebels from 2020 to 2022 before transferring to California in 2023. In 52 games, the cornerback recorded 14 interceptions, 25 defended passes, 3 forced fumbles, and 203 tackles (152 solo). He also has a good eye balance for big plays, is quick to pounce on throws, with a good route balance from zone. That’s a good pick.

The other two were also good defensive picks. Norman-Lott played 44 games and recorded 13.5 sacks with 2 defended passes, and 89 tackles (47 solo). The slippery pass rusher will also get good support from the 26.5 sacks EDGE Ashton Gillotte. But the cause of concern is something else: are the Chiefs focusing extra hard on defense and neglecting the offense?

Patrick Mahomes needs help in scoring points as well. They won 4 games last year with a point difference of 2 or fewer points. They only scored over 30 points in a game for the first time in the Divisional championship fixture. It’s clear the HC needed to prioritize support for Patrick Mahomes on offense. And fans weren’t shy of reminding Andy Reid & co. on social media.

Fans target Andy Reid for neglecting Patrick Mahomes

Understandably, the Eagles took advantage of a poor defensive performance in the Super Bowl. But the Chiefs also failed to score a single point deep into the third quarter. It appears their head coach forgot that his franchise ranked 22nd in the league for rushing, with a meagre 105.3 yards per game. And he still doesn’t seem bothered by that gap. One fan served a polite reminder, “Great pick, running back next please.” It’s the simple message that everyone from the Chiefs Kingdom wants to give.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Andy Reid's defensive obsession leaving Patrick Mahomes to fend for himself on the field?

Have an interesting take?

However, some other fans were angry. They want to be in the best possible shape to reestablish their dynasty credentials. Last year was a suspense. Patrick Mahomes’ individual brilliance across the season took them to the Super Bowl single-handedly. But they want offensive players. “Do we not realize having a good running back is important,” another fan commented on social media. “Why no help for your QB, though? Offensive weapons been a– for like 3 years,” one fan brought history lessons for the AFC West franchise.

Over-burdening Patrick Mahomes is not the solution. He took the Chiefs to 14th in the league with 327.6 passing yards per game, even with an injured lineup. Rookie WR Xavier Worthy was there for him. Yet the neglect continues. One laughed while writing, “No RB, no WR lmaooo“. The Chiefs fans have a simple request. Draft an RB (preferably) and/or a WR. One fan mentioned, “We needed that cb depth. Now please in the 4th take a RB.” ASU RB Cam Skattebo is emerging as the preferred choice. Will Andy Reid listen to this fan’s plea, “Really wanted skattabo“?

After 2 days of extreme planning, all eyes are now on the final day. The glass is half full for some, half empty for others. Will the Chiefs brass listen to their Kingdom and draft those offensive weapons to leave with their cup full?
